Does ulcerative colitis affect pregnancy?

The disease of ulcerative colitis is caused by women not paying attention to their diet in life. The treatment of this disease is relatively complicated and requires us to slowly receive treatment from a doctor. For female friends with ulcerative colitis, you can get pregnant, but the disease is more likely to relapse during pregnancy, and the stability of the fetus is not as good as that of other normal female friends.

For women of childbearing age with ulcerative colitis, 85%-90% can have normal pregnancies and childbirths. However, due to the variable nature of ulcerative colitis, repeated attacks and many complications, more professional doctors are needed to provide accurate guidance and deal with various problems that arise during pregnancy and childbirth in female patients.

When ulcerative colitis is in its active phase, pregnancy often aggravates the symptoms of colitis, especially in the first three months of pregnancy, although a small number of patients may improve. When ulcerative colitis reaches remission, 25%-52% of patients have more relapses within the first 3 months of pregnancy and less relapses in the postpartum period; the spontaneous abortion rate is high; some patients have severe and prolonged disease after induced labor.

In general, patients with ulcerative colitis should delay pregnancy until their disease has been effectively controlled for more than one year. If the disease is not effectively controlled or is controlled for less than one year before pregnancy, the condition may worsen during pregnancy or early after delivery. Data show that approximately 1/3 of patients with inactive ulcerative colitis and 2/3 of pregnant women with ulcerative colitis experience worsening of their condition during pregnancy, and approximately 10% of pregnant women may experience spontaneous abortion and terminate their pregnancy.

The ulcerative colitis introduced in this article will affect pregnancy. I hope that female friends with ulcerative colitis will not prepare to conceive at this time. You should first treat the disease before considering conception. For patients with ulcerative colitis, pregnancy will have a certain impact on the fetus and may easily lead to miscarriage.
