Why does menstruation last for half a month?

Why does menstruation last for half a month?

Normal menstruation usually lasts between 2 and 7 days, but some women are prone to problems such as irregular menstruation. For example, menstruation lasts for half a month. Such a long menstrual period may actually indicate that there are problems with your physical health, and you need to check and understand it in a comprehensive manner. Clinically, if menstruation lasts too long, it may be caused by functional uterine bleeding.

Functional uterine bleeding seen clinically can be divided into two categories: anovulatory functional uterine bleeding and ovulatory functional uterine bleeding. Anovulatory functional uterine bleeding often occurs during adolescence, which means that adolescent functional uterine bleeding belongs to this type. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding in adolescence is related to ovarian function. Under normal circumstances, the ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone, which change regularly and cause cyclical changes in the endometrium. However, the ovaries of adolescent women have not yet matured, and the coordination between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and ovaries is imperfect, making the function of the ovaries very unstable. In addition, the emotions of adolescent women are prone to fluctuations, and factors such as environmental and climate changes and malnutrition often affect the cerebral cortex's regulation of ovarian function.

This causes ovarian ovulation obstruction, which means that the ovarian follicles grow and increase without ovulating, thus continuously secreting estrogen. The endometrium is overproliferated and becomes very thick due to the long-term effect of estrogen. However, the amount of estrogen secretion is highly volatile. When the level of estrogen secretion decreases, the endometrium loses hormonal support and sheds and bleeds; when the level of estrogen secretion rises, uterine bleeding stops.

Therefore, the clinical manifestations are heavy menstrual bleeding and irregular menstruation. Ovulatory functional uterine bleeding occurs when the ovaries ovulate every month, but the ovarian follicles are underdeveloped. Although a corpus luteum is produced, the amount of progesterone secreted by the corpus luteum is insufficient, or the duration of progesterone secretion is too short, so the endometrium sheds. This situation manifests as spotting bleeding before and after menstruation, or bleeding between two menstruations, and a shortened menstrual cycle. This situation often occurs in young women of childbearing age, especially after childbirth or miscarriage. The treatment principles for functional uterine bleeding are to stop bleeding and regulate menstruation. Although Western medicine is effective in treating functional uterine bleeding, it has serious adverse reactions and many contraindications, which exclude many patients. Traditional Chinese medicine has many methods to treat this disease, with unique effects, few side effects, and is not prone to recurrence. In addition, Chinese medicine follows the concept of treating patients based on individual conditions, location and time, and provides treatment based on each patient's specific conditions to achieve the goal of tailored treatment.

The above are the main reasons that may cause prolonged menstruation. I hope that female friends can learn more about these common sense. Because only if we pay attention to these reproductive health common sense, we can discover them in time when we encounter problems. In this way, we can remind ourselves to take active treatment measures and reduce adverse effects.
