What are the symptoms of PMS?

We all know that women experience a menstrual period every month. Menstruation often brings a lot of troubles to some women. Many women have experienced the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Generally, many women will experience symptoms such as irritability and back pain before their period. However, since many women lack understanding of the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, they always fail to get timely adjustments for premenstrual syndrome. Let us take a look at the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

1. Mental symptoms : including changes in emotions, cognition and behavior. Initially, you feel general fatigue, easy fatigue, drowsiness, and lethargy. There are two completely different types of emotional changes: one is mental tension, physical and mental anxiety, irritability, picky, and easy to anger. Trivial matters can cause emotional impulses, and even quarrels, crying, and loss of self-control; the other is becoming listless, depressed, anxious, sad, or emotionally indifferent, loving to be alone, unwilling to interact with others and participate in social activities, inability to concentrate, weakened judgment, and even paranoid delusions and suicidal thoughts.

(II) Fluid retention symptoms

1. Edema of the hands, feet, and eyelids: This is relatively common. A small number of patients experience significant weight gain, and clothes that usually fit them become tight and uncomfortable. Some people have a feeling of abdominal distension, which may be accompanied by gastrointestinal dysfunction such as nausea and vomiting, and occasionally intestinal cramps. Clinically, diarrhea and frequent urination may occur during menstruation. Due to edema and congestion of pelvic tissues, symptoms such as pelvic distension and lumbar pain may occur.

2. Premenstrual headache: It is a common complaint, mostly bilateral, but can also be unilateral. The pain site is not fixed, usually in the temporal or occipital region, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. It may occur a few days before menstruation and reach its peak when menstrual blood appears. The headache is persistent or unprovoked, and comes and goes. It may be related to intermittent intracranial edema and is easily confused with menstrual migraine, which is often unilateral, with prodromal symptoms such as dizziness and nausea appearing a few minutes or hours before the onset.

3. Breast tenderness: Before menstruation, the breasts often feel full, swollen and painful, especially around the outer edge of the breast and the nipple. In severe cases, the pain may radiate to the armpits and shoulders and may affect sleep.

(III) Other symptoms

1. Changes in appetite: Appetite increases. Most people have a craving for sweets or a liking for some special salty foods. Some people dislike certain foods or have anorexia.

2. Symptoms of autonomic nervous system function: hot flashes, sweating, dizziness, vertigo and palpitations due to unstable vasoconstriction and vasomotor movement.

3. Oily skin, acne, and changes in sexual desire.

By understanding the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, friends who usually feel uncomfortable before menstruation can self-check whether they have premenstrual syndrome based on the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Women's health is an issue that we cannot ignore. If premenstrual syndrome occurs, we must make timely adjustments to avoid affecting our normal life and work.
