What is Amenorrhea and Galactorrhea Syndrome?

The female body is very magical. Every woman has a physiological cycle every month. Menstruation is very important for women. Whether menstruation is normal is directly related to women's fertility. However, due to various reasons, women always suffer from some diseases. Amenorrhea and galactorrhea syndrome is a disease that seriously affects women's fertility. If there is no fertility, it will also affect the harmony and happiness of the family. Let's understand what amenorrhea and galactorrhea syndrome is.

Everyone knows that after giving birth, milk is naturally discharged from both breasts to feed the baby, and during the breastfeeding period, most women do not have menstruation. This is a natural phenomenon. However, some women, although not pregnant, will naturally secrete varying amounts of milk when their breasts are squeezed, and are often accompanied by amenorrhea. The degree of amenorrhea is also inconsistent. Some only experience infrequent menstruation, while others have no menstruation for months or even years. This is a pathological manifestation, clinically known as amenorrhea galactorrhea syndrome.

If blood tests are taken from these patients with amenorrhea and galactorrhea syndrome, it is found that most of them have elevated levels of a hormone called pituitary prolactin in their blood. Under normal circumstances, this hormone only increases during pregnancy and postpartum lactation to maintain the formation and secretion of milk. Therefore, this hormone is related to milk secretion.

The most common causes of increased pituitary prolactin are pituitary adenoma and primary hypothyroidism. Oral contraceptives may sometimes cause lactation and amenorrhea. Some other drugs, such as long-term use of reserpine or chlorpromazine, may also sometimes cause lactation and amenorrhea.

Therefore, women with amenorrhea and galactorrhea syndrome should go to the hospital for a detailed examination to find out the cause of the disease as much as possible so that targeted treatment can be provided. For women with lactation and amenorrhea who have no obvious cause after examination, bromocriptine can effectively suppress hyperprolactinemia, whether it is functional or caused by tumor-induced increased pituitary prolactin levels, and can also restore normal ovulatory menstruation. The disadvantage is that recurrence occurs after stopping the drug, but the drug is still effective when used again, which shows that this treatment is only a symptomatic treatment. In addition, once pregnancy is confirmed, the drug should be stopped immediately, but some people have found that no fetal malformations were observed even in early pregnancy when taking this drug.

When a girl becomes a woman, she is destined to suffer from many gynecological diseases. Gynecological diseases are a disease that cannot be ignored and seriously affect our physical health. If amenorrhea and galactorrhea syndrome occur, we must go to the hospital for treatment in time to avoid affecting our fertility in the future. It will bring a lot of misfortune to many family lives, and not being able to be a mother is also a lifelong regret.
