Is brown vaginal discharge normal after menstruation?

Women always have some problems such as irregular menstruation or abnormal leucorrhea. Both of these diseases cannot be ignored and are difficult to cure all at once. The leucorrhea after menstruation shows periodic changes. Sometimes it is more transparent, sometimes it is white, sometimes it is thinner, and sometimes it is thicker. Many women today cannot really tell what constitutes abnormal vaginal discharge.

So what causes brown vaginal discharge after menstruation? In fact, there are too many female friends who simply do not understand gynecological diseases and have some serious misunderstandings, so they miss the best treatment period. Pathological leucorrhea includes inflammatory leucorrhea, leucorrhea caused by tumors and leucorrhea caused by foreign bodies. Leucorrhea is a mixture of vaginal mucosal exudate, cervical gland and endometrial gland secretions, Bartholin's gland secretions, and labia majora and labia minora sebaceous gland secretions, with the first two being the main components. Leucorrhea contains vaginal epithelial exfoliated cells, white blood cells and lactobacilli.

Brown vaginal discharge after menstruation can be divided into physiological and pathological types, and the causes and characteristics are different. Here we will talk about physiological leucorrhea and pathological leucorrhea respectively. Physiological leucorrhea is a white, thin, paste-like liquid that is generally odorless. Under normal circumstances, leucorrhea plays the role of moisturizing the skin of the labia and vagina. The sebaceous glands of the labia secrete a viscous milky fluid; the Bartholin's glands secrete a colorless, clear, acidic fluid; the vaginal epithelium has no glands, and its white, thin, paste-like fluid is the exudate of the vaginal mucosa and is acidic; the cervical mucus is alkaline, like egg white; the endometrial secretions are thinner than the cervical mucus and in smaller quantities. The amount of vaginal discharge varies and is related to age, level and congestion of the reproductive organs.

The main reason why post-menstrual leucorrhea is brown is that after puberty, as the ovaries gradually develop to maturity and the secretion of progesterone, the properties and amount of leucorrhea vary with the ovarian cycle. In the middle of the menstrual cycle (before ovulation), due to the vigorous secretion of cervical glands, the cervical mucus component in the leucorrhea increases, resulting in a large amount of leucorrhea, which is clear and thin like egg white, to facilitate the passage of sperm; after ovulation, the amount of leucorrhea gradually decreases and becomes thicker; before menstruation, due to pelvic congestion, the vaginal exudate increases, and the amount of leucorrhea increases accordingly. After menopause, due to the decline of ovarian function, the decrease of sex hormones in the body, the gradual atrophy of the reproductive tract, the glandular secretion and the exudation of the vaginal mucosa are greatly reduced, resulting in a decrease in leucorrhea.

When a woman is sexually excited, a large amount of fluid is discharged from her vagina, which acts as a lubricant. In the past, people generally believed that during sexual excitement, it was mainly the Bartholin's glands that secreted more fluid, but now it is believed that the large amount of fluid mainly comes from the increased exudation of the vaginal mucosa. During sexual excitement, the blood vessels in the vaginal wall become significantly congested and dilated, producing a large amount of plasma exudate. Gynecological diseases often cause increased leucorrhea, which turns white or brown after menstruation. This phenomenon of increased leucorrhea and brown leucorrhea after menstruation has become symptoms of the disease, and its amount and properties are significantly different from normal leucorrhea.

Occasionally, brown vaginal discharge after menstruation is not a problem, it may just be caused by residual blood. If your vaginal discharge is brown for a long time, you may need to go to the hospital for a check-up. If a woman's leucorrhea is abnormal, it can easily develop into a gynecological disease. The increasing incidence of diseases such as cervical erosion may be the result of women not paying enough attention to it.
