Perilla is commonly used as a traditional Chinese medicine in China, while the Japanese mostly use it in cooking, especially as an indispensable accompaniment to sashimi. In a few areas of China, it is also used as a vegetable or in tea. Perilla leaves, also known as perilla leaves, have the functions of dispelling cold, promoting qi and harmonizing the stomach. They are mainly used to treat colds, coughs, chest and abdominal distension, nausea and vomiting. The seeds are also called perilla seeds, which have the functions of relieving cough, asthma and expectoration. The whole plant of Perilla can be used to distill Perilla oil, and the oil from the seeds is also called Perilla oil. Long-term consumption of Perilla oil has obvious therapeutic effects on the treatment of coronary heart disease and hyperlipidemia.

Perilla has been cultivated in China for about 2,000 years. Li Shizhen of the Ming Dynasty once recorded: "Perilla has leaves when it is young, which can be eaten with vegetables, or pickled with salt and plum brine, which is very fragrant. It can be made into cooked soup and drunk in summer." It can be seen that perilla is very common in the Chinese diet. Chinese people use perilla to cook various dishes, often serving them with fish and crabs. The dishes include braised fish with perilla, duck with perilla, fried snails with perilla, Su salt pancakes, fried lamb with perilla and lily, and steamed lamb with perilla in a copper basin.

The leaves of the Korean perilla variety are larger, rounder, flatter, and more densely serrated than those of the Japanese green perilla, with one side being purple-red and the other side being green. Koreans use perilla to make kimchi. Canned perilla kimchi is sold in almost all Korean stores around the world. In this can, one red pepper is wrapped around every two perilla leaves. Fresh basil leaves can be used to make salads. Perilla seeds are used as a seasoning for meat dishes and are also used to make perilla sesame salt. Koreans are accustomed to eating barbecue with fresh perilla leaves or chili leaves, and there is a craze among Koreans to use perilla leaves to supplement calcium because perilla leaves are rich in calcium.

Vietnamese people use basil leaves in stews and dishes, or as a garnish on Vietnamese rice noodles. The variety of shiso they use has leaves that are red with green on one side and purple on the other, and has a stronger aroma than the Japanese variety.
