Are you still worried about what to eat if you have chronic kidney disease? Doctors give you 4 dietary suggestions that are very practical

Control protein intake

- Protein is an essential nutrient for the human body, but for patients with chronic kidney disease, protein intake needs to be adjusted according to the renal function. Generally speaking, when renal function is mildly impaired, protein intake can be appropriately reduced to 0.8-1.0 grams per kilogram of body weight per day; when renal function is moderately or severely impaired, protein intake should be further reduced to 0.6-0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day.

- Choose high-quality protein foods, such as eggs, milk, lean meat, fish, etc. These foods contain a high proportion of essential amino acids, which can meet the body's nutritional needs and reduce the production of kidney metabolic waste. For example, you can eat an egg, drink a glass of milk, and pair it with an appropriate amount of lean meat or fish every day.

Limit sodium intake

- Excessive sodium intake can lead to water and sodium retention, increase the burden on the kidneys, and may cause high blood pressure, further damaging the kidneys. Therefore, patients with chronic kidney disease should strictly limit their sodium intake to no more than 3-5 grams per day.

- Reduce the intake of high-salt foods, such as pickles, cured meat, ham, instant noodles, etc., and use less salt and soy sauce during cooking. You can try using some natural seasonings, such as lemon juice, vinegar, herbs, etc., to increase the flavor of food.

Control potassium and phosphorus intake

- As kidney function declines, the kidney's ability to excrete potassium and phosphorus will also weaken, making hyperkalemia and hyperphosphatemia more likely to occur, which can cause damage to the heart, bones, etc.

- For foods with high potassium content, such as bananas, oranges, potatoes, spinach, etc., the amount of consumption needs to be adjusted according to the blood potassium level. If the blood potassium level is normal, it can be consumed in moderation; if the blood potassium level is high, the consumption should be limited. For phosphorus intake, avoid consuming processed foods and beverages with high phosphorus content, such as cola, animal offal, nuts, etc. If necessary, phosphate binders can be used under the guidance of a doctor to lower the blood phosphorus level.

Ensure adequate calorie intake

- Since chronic kidney disease patients limit their intake of nutrients such as protein, they need to ensure adequate calorie supply to maintain normal metabolism and activity of the body and reduce the decomposition of protein in the body.

- Calories mainly come from carbohydrates and fats. You can choose some foods that are rich in carbohydrates and have a small burden on the kidneys, such as rice, noodles, steamed bread, etc., but be careful to control the amount to avoid high blood sugar. At the same time, you can take some vegetable oils, such as olive oil, linseed oil, etc., to provide unsaturated fatty acids, but avoid eating animal oils and fried foods to prevent high blood lipids.

The diet of patients with chronic kidney disease needs to take into account many factors, follow the advice of doctors or nutritionists, develop a personalized diet plan, and stick to it for a long time. Reasonable dietary adjustments can help control the progression of the disease, improve the quality of life, and delay the time to enter the dialysis or kidney transplant stage.
