Why does our skin become wrinkled after taking a shower?

Have you ever noticed that the skin on our fingers and toes becomes wrinkled after we take a shower or soak in water for a long time? This is actually a very interesting phenomenon, and there is a scientific explanation behind it!

1. Structure of the Skin

The outermost layer of our skin has a structure called the "stratum corneum", which is composed of dead skin cells. These cells are like a protective film that helps us resist external damage and also prevents excessive water loss.

2. The relationship between skin and water

When we soak in water, the stratum corneum absorbs water. This water causes the skin cells to swell, just like a sponge absorbs water. But interestingly, the skin does not swell evenly, but becomes wrinkled because of the connections between cells.

3. Evolutionary Wisdom

Scientists have discovered that this wrinkled skin is actually an evolutionary advantage. In ancient times, humans needed to live in humid environments, such as in rainforests or by rivers. Wrinkled skin can increase the friction of fingers and toes, allowing us to better grasp objects or walk in slippery environments, just like the tread on a tire, which can prevent slipping.

4. Modern Revelation

Although we don't need to catch fish in the rainforest now, this phenomenon still reminds us that the structure and function of the skin are very magical. Moreover, it also tells us that the skin becomes fragile after absorbing water, so drying the body in time after taking a bath, especially the skin folds, can reduce the risk of skin infection.

Next time you take a shower, take a closer look at your fingers and toes. Isn’t that amazing?
