Is it necessary to start drug treatment when uric acid is high? When is the best time to start treatment?

Everyone must be familiar with the hazards of the three highs. If blood sugar, blood lipids, and blood pressure levels are not well controlled, it is easy to induce a series of complications such as coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction, etc. However, in recent years, with the improvement of people's living standards, the "fourth high" - high uric acid has quietly arrived, and it is more inclined to young people. High uric acid refers to the increase in fasting blood uric acid levels under normal dietary conditions, which is higher than 420mmol/l for men and higher than 360mmol/l for women. At this point, everyone must be wondering, is it necessary to start drug treatment as long as the uric acid level is found to be high? Of course not, this requires the following three situations.

1. Simple hyperuricemia

For this group of people who have high uric acid levels but no comorbidities, non-drug treatment is the first choice, such as reducing food intake, adjusting diet structure, exercising regularly, drinking enough water, and avoiding alcohol and sugary drinks. If the uric acid level remains high after the changes and is greater than 540mmol/l, drug treatment should be initiated.

2. High uric acid and complications

If the patient has a high uric acid level and has any of the following complications, uric acid-lowering medication should be initiated immediately. (1) Hypertension (2) Abnormal lipid metabolism (3) Diabetes (4) Obesity (5) Stroke (6) Coronary heart disease (7) Heart failure (8) Uric acid kidney stones or renal impairment. The target value needs to be reduced to 360-540mmol/l.

Here is a kind reminder for everyone that the treatment of uric acid reduction is not achieved overnight, but requires long-term, systematic treatment. In addition, regular monitoring is required to effectively treat hyperuricemia and reduce the risk of systemic complications.
