CCS Insight, an analysis agency, recently predicted that by the end of 2023, there will be 1.3 billion iPhones in circulation, more than half of which will be second-hand. CCS Insight, which has been tracking the used device market for the past few years, found that the iPhone is by far the most reused smartphone.

"Over the past few years, we've seen a surge in interest in used iPhones, and there are several reasons for this," said Leo Gebbie, the firm's lead analyst.

One of the biggest reasons, Gebbie said, is the lack of major upgrades between the iPhone and the next iPhone . The iPhone 15 just came out and is better than the iPhone 14, which is better than the iPhone 13, but they are all incremental improvements and the difference is not particularly large.

“More and more customers are thinking, I can buy a brand new iPhone 15 for a thousand pounds, or I can buy a high-quality refurbished iPhone 13 for four or five hundred pounds .”

According to research from CCS Insight, the second-hand smartphone market is almost entirely dominated by Apple. Gebbie said: “Part of that is because new iPhones are so expensive. This is a way for people to get the device they want at a low cost.

Gebbie also pointed out: "This situation will affect Apple's revenue. At some point in the future, Apple may consider this issue more seriously."
