Attention! Do not take these medicines with fruits!

Review expert: Wang Xuejiang, professor at Capital Medical University

The sweet and sour fruits are rich in vitamins and various trace elements.

Very beneficial to the human body

Did you know?

They can't be taken with certain medicines.

Otherwise it may endanger your life

In daily life, we often eat some fruits to supplement vitamins. At the same time, fruits are also a good choice when visiting patients. However, some ingredients in fruits will react with some drugs in the human body, causing various adverse reactions. Therefore, you need to be extra careful during medication. Not all fruits can be eaten, so as to avoid serious consequences.

grapefruit

Grapefruit, also known as grapefruit, contains a component called furanocoumarin. Although it cannot directly harm the human body, it will inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 enzyme in the liver, which is one of the enzymes in the liver responsible for metabolizing drugs.

If you eat grapefruit after taking medicine, the furanocoumarins in grapefruit will cause the enzyme activity to decrease or fail to metabolize the drug, prolonging the time the drug stays in the body, which is equivalent to increasing the drug dosage. There is an increased risk of adverse reactions. In severe cases, sudden death, acute renal failure, respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, etc. may occur. In addition, grapefruit also contains flavonoids, which can reduce the body's absorption of certain drugs and reduce the efficacy of these drugs . Therefore, you must read the instructions when taking medicine! Currently, there are more than 85 drugs that are affected by grapefruit, and about half of them may cause serious adverse reactions. For example, some sleeping pills, anticancer drugs, antibiotics, painkillers, etc.

Among them, maraviroc for the treatment of HIV infection , lovastatin and simvastatin for lowering blood lipids , dronedarone for antiarrhythmics , ergotamine for headache relief , and oral ketamine for anesthetics and lurasidone for antipsychotics are in the extremely high-risk range. In addition, there are many anti-tumor drugs, anti-infective agents, cardiovascular drugs, cough suppressants, analgesics, immunosuppressants, etc., which are high-risk. It is recommended not to eat grapefruit when taking medication, and grapefruit, oranges and limes, which are closely related to grapefruit, should also be eaten with caution.

banana

Bananas are rich in various minerals, such as potassium, magnesium and iron, which play an important role in the human body. They can play a certain role in lowering blood pressure, preventing and treating gastric ulcers and anti-depression. However, special care should be taken when eating bananas when taking certain medications.

Patients who are taking potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements should avoid eating bananas, otherwise it may cause excessive potassium levels in the blood, leading to hyperkalemia, and also inhibit the cardiovascular system, causing numbness of the limbs, muscle weakness, drowsiness, fatigue and other discomfort symptoms.

Bananas and quinolone antibiotics cannot be eaten at the same time because bananas contain 5-hydroxytryptamine, which can reduce the secretion level of gastric acid, thus affecting the absorption and efficacy of these drugs, thereby reducing the therapeutic effect.
persimmon

As one of the common fruits in autumn and winter, persimmon can supplement the human body with trace elements and is also beneficial for lowering blood pressure. However, persimmons contain more tannic acid, which is very easy to react with iron supplements to form tannic acid iron salt precipitation , which affects the absorption of drugs and reduces the efficacy of drugs. In addition, persimmons cannot be eaten with calcium supplements and antibiotics . Eating persimmons with calcium supplements such as calcium gluconate and calcium lactate granules not only affects calcium absorption, but also easily forms stones. Eating persimmons with antibiotics such as amoxicillin and cephalexin capsules will irritate the gastrointestinal tract and may cause stomach colic.

These fruits should also be noted

Apples are rich in vitamin K, especially in the peel, which is a risk for patients who are taking anticoagulant drugs to prevent blood clots. For example, the anticoagulant drug warfarin prevents blood clots by inhibiting the action of vitamin K. If there is too much vitamin K in the body, it will weaken the effect of anticoagulants and increase the possibility of blood clots.

Avocados cannot be taken at the same time as drugs such as selegiline and moclobemide , because avocados contain more tyramine, and these drugs will inhibit the degradation of tyramine and cause high blood pressure.

You cannot eat kiwi fruit when taking antibiotics , otherwise it will speed up the decomposition of antibiotics and affect the efficacy.

Antihypertensive drugs and pineapple should not be taken together. Taking them at the same time may cause low blood pressure.

In addition, some acidic fruits contain a large amount of organic acids and should not be taken together with alkaline drugs and sulfonamide drugs . First, alkaline drugs will undergo acid-base neutralization reaction with organic acids, reducing their efficacy; second, in an acidic environment, sulfonamide drugs are easy to crystallize and form stones.

For safety reasons, if you are unsure whether a certain fruit will affect the medication you are taking, it is best to consult a doctor. At the same time, you should also follow the doctor's advice and read the instructions carefully to avoid eating with prohibited foods.
