Diabetic foot refers to infection, ulceration or destruction of tissues beyond the ankle and foot associated with lower extremity neuropathy and/or peripheral arterial disease in patients with a history of diabetes. The key to preventing diabetic foot is to control blood sugar levels and pay attention to foot care. Here are some ways to prevent diabetic foot.

(1) Control blood sugar levels: Monitor blood sugar levels regularly and follow your doctor’s advice on medication to keep blood sugar levels within the normal range.

(2) Quit smoking and drinking, control your diet properly, and exercise appropriately.

(3) Foot care: It is recommended to wear light-colored socks and choose comfortable casual shoes with good breathability and thick soles to avoid squeezing, scratching or bumping your feet. Avoid burns when washing your feet and keep warm in winter. When trimming your toenails, be careful not to cut them. Check your feet every day and pay attention to any abnormalities such as redness, swelling, ulcers or abscesses. Keep your feet clean and keep the skin of your feet moist.

(4) Regular foot examinations: Go to a professional medical institution for regular foot examinations, including nerve function examinations, vascular blood supply examinations, etc. If the skin temperature drops or abnormal sensation in the feet occurs, further examination should be conducted in the hospital.
