[Medical Q&A] Is depression really a "mental cold"? Can it be completely cured?

Depression is called "the cold of the soul" by some people, which attempts to describe its prevalence and treatability in a popular way. But this metaphor underestimates its severity. Depression is a complex psychiatric illness. It is not just a short-term low mood, but a persistent mood disorder with varying degrees of severity. People with depression often feel deep sadness, helplessness and hopelessness, and may lose interest in daily activities and even have difficulty completing basic daily tasks. This state may last for weeks, months or even longer, having a significant impact on life, work and interpersonal relationships.

Although the symptoms of depression are similar to those of ordinary low mood, its impact is more far-reaching and more difficult to relieve on its own. Therefore, depression requires professional medical intervention. Treatments include psychotherapy (such as cognitive behavioral therapy), medication (such as antidepressants), and lifestyle adjustments (such as increasing exercise and maintaining a regular schedule). For many people, through comprehensive treatment, patients can achieve complete remission. However, depression has the risk of recurrence, so long-term maintenance treatment and self-management are very important. Even if the symptoms disappear, patients still need to maintain good mental health habits, such as regular psychotherapy, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and coping with stress and mood changes in a timely manner.
