After more than ten years of tears, she finally smiled again after the second surgery

"I don't have to wipe my tears all the time anymore. I'm completely cured. I'm so grateful to Director Zhang." Ms. Xiao said excitedly when she was discharged from the hospital on March 15.

Ms. Xiao, 47 years old, lives in Gansu. She suffered a right facial injury more than 10 years ago, after which she began to have symptoms of tearing in her right eye, accompanied by purulent secretions. In 2012, Ms. Xiao, who was troubled by tearing, underwent a right lacrimal sac removal at a local hospital. After the operation, Ms. Xiao's right eye no longer had secretions, but the symptoms of epiphora did not improve.

Although she sought medical treatment many times, there was no good treatment. As a last resort, Ms. Xiao could only carry a handkerchief with her. Recently, Ms. Xiao was introduced to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment. After examination, it was found that the upper and lower lacrimal ducts of her right eye were torn. CT scans of both orbits showed multiple fractures of the medial wall, lower wall and right maxillary frontal process of the right orbit, prolapse of the right anterior orbital fat, right maxillary sinusitis, pneumatization of the left middle turbinate, hypertrophy of bilateral turbinates, and right deviation of the nasal septum. Finally, Ms. Xiao was diagnosed with a laceration of the right lacrimal duct (tear duct rupture) after right lacrimal cystectomy and required surgical treatment. Zhang Jiang, director of the hospital's lacrimal duct/eye and nose-related specialist department, performed a right eye conjunctival sac-nasal anastomosis on Ms. Xiao.

Director Zhang Jiang introduced that lacrimal canaliculus rupture is a common acute injury in ophthalmology. The lacrimal canaliculus is an important component of tears. Under normal circumstances, tears will flow along the lacrimal canaliculus to the nasal cavity and throat. After the lacrimal canaliculus is broken, the tears have nowhere to flow and can only flow out of the eyes. Lacrimal canaliculus injury is usually caused by blunt contusion of the eye, but it can also be caused by sharp cutting. Lacrimal canaliculus rupture is very harmful. If it is not repaired in time, it will lead to blockage of the effectiveness of the lacrimal canaliculus, lifelong epiphora, and seriously affect the quality of life.
