【World Sleep Day】It’s not difficult to get a good night’s sleep

About 1/3 of our life is spent

Spend time sleeping

Sleep is closely related to health

However, epidemiological studies have shown

More than 15% of people suffer from chronic insomnia

Sleep apnea syndrome patients

About 4%

Sleep disorders are the main cause of sudden death at night

Getting a good night's sleep is not difficult

Sleep medicine problems do not exist independently, but are related to multiple disciplines. This morning, the Department of Neurology of our hospital, together with the Department of Respiratory Medicine and the Department of Otolaryngology, carried out a large-scale free clinic. At the free clinic, Director of the Department of Neurology, Zhong Shijiang, led doctors from various departments to provide health consultation services to citizens.

Snoring ≠ Good Sleep

But in fact, snoring may also be caused by health problems. Mr. Zhao (pseudonym), 47 years old, has high blood pressure on weekdays. One day at noon not long ago, Mr. Zhao suddenly felt weak in his right arm without any cause, accompanied by dizziness . I thought it would be better in a while, but I didn’t expect it to be the same after an hour. Because he had the underlying disease of hypertension , he was worried that it was an emergency, so he rushed to our hospital for treatment. After a complete examination, Mr. Zhao was diagnosed with: "left basal ganglia infarction" , which is what we often call cerebral infarction!

In the neurology ward, the doctor found that the patient snored when he slept after further asking about the medical history and daily rounds. The doctor arranged a sleep monitoring for the patient, and the report showed that the patient's breathing stopped 46.5 times in one hour of sleep, the lowest blood oxygen saturation dropped to 49% during deep sleep, and the apnea-hypopnea index reached 40 times/h. The patient can be diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) . Therefore, it can be considered that the patient's cerebral infarction, hypertension, etc. are related to sleep apnea .

About OSA Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)——

Under normal circumstances, an unobstructed airway allows air to flow in and out freely. OSA patients stop breathing during sleep, which can happen hundreds of times every night, with each episode lasting from a dozen seconds to several minutes, causing systemic hypoxia in the patient.

When the human body's blood oxygen saturation decreases and the body is deprived of oxygen, the brain generates a wake-up signal. After the human body wakes up, the upper airway dilator muscles tense up again, the airway opens and breathing resumes. This cycle repeats itself at night, seriously affecting the patient's sleep quality, making it difficult for the patient to enter a deep sleep state and get high-quality sleep.

Long-term lack of oxygen during sleep without symptomatic treatment can damage multiple organs throughout the body and even cause high blood pressure, diabetes, heart failure, sudden death at night, stroke, cognitive impairment, and developmental delay in children .

What are the main symptoms of OSA?

Snoring while sleeping, sometimes stopping breathing, waking up repeatedly

Daytime tiredness and sleepiness

Dizziness, headache, and dry mouth in the morning

Sweating during sleep and frequent urination at night

If you suspect you have this disease, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible. The doctor will conduct relevant examinations and provide symptomatic treatment based on your condition.
May you sleep well every day

A healthy and energetic life
