Beware of conjunctivitis during the peak flu season

Recently, many people have developed symptoms such as fever, cold, and cough, and children's hospitals are overcrowded. During the peak influenza season, in addition to preventing respiratory infections and other diseases, we must also pay special attention to the prevention of eye diseases and be careful of conjunctivitis.

What is influenza?

Influenza is the abbreviation of influenza, an acute respiratory disease caused by influenza A, B, and C viruses. Influenza is more common in winter and spring in China, with clinical manifestations such as high fever, fatigue, headache, cough, and muscle aches all over the body. Influenza viruses are prone to mutation and are highly contagious. People are generally susceptible and have a high incidence rate.

What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. Since most of the conjunctiva is in direct contact with the outside world and is easily affected by the external environment, it is a common eye disease.

The main symptoms of conjunctivitis

After suffering from conjunctivitis, symptoms such as foreign body sensation, burning sensation, and increased secretions will appear. When the lesion involves the cornea, photophobia, tearing, and varying degrees of vision loss may occur.

Be more careful about the occurrence of conjunctivitis

Influenza is usually caused by a viral infection. At this time, the body's immunity is reduced and the eyes are also susceptible to viral invasion. If you do not pay attention to your own protection during the illness and often rub your eyes with your hands, the bacteria or viruses on your hands will enter the eyes, causing conjunctivitis and other eye diseases.

Things to note during the flu season

Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital kindly reminds you to pay attention to personal protection during the flu season, wash your hands frequently, do not rub your eyes with your hands, try to avoid crowded public places, and wear a mask when going out. If you are diagnosed with the flu, try to avoid wearing contact lenses to prevent eye infection. If you experience eye discomfort, you need to seek medical attention immediately.
