Popular Science | Potential risks of high myopia

In addition to simply being unable to see clearly, high myopia actually poses many potential dangers. Today, we will give you some basic information about the fundus lesions that high myopia can cause.

What is high myopia?

According to the classification of myopia degrees, myopia below 600 degrees is called low-moderate myopia; myopia greater than 600 degrees is called high myopia; and myopia above 1000 degrees is called super-high myopia.

What fundus lesions can high myopia cause?

1. Vitreous opacity

The vitreous body is a gel-like substance in the eye, located between the lens and the retina, and is part of the eye's refractive medium. Light enters the eye from the cornea, passes through the lens, aqueous humor, and vitreous body, and is finally imaged on the retina. With age, high myopia, and other reasons, the probability of vitreous body turbidity increases greatly.

2. Macular degeneration and rupture

The macula is an area on the retina with a small depression in the center, clinically known as the fovea centralis. This is the part of the retina where vision is very sharp. Therefore, when the lesion involves the macula, the symptom of a significant decrease in vision is very likely to occur.

3. Retinal detachment

The retina is the inner layer of the eye. The retina is divided into two layers, the outer retinal pigment epithelium and the inner retinal neuroepithelium. There is a potential gap between the two layers. When the two layers separate, it is called retinal detachment.

Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital kindly reminds that patients with high myopia must pay attention to regular fundus examinations and use their eyes in a standardized and moderate manner to prevent myopia from getting worse. In terms of diet, we must control sugar intake, pay more attention to supplementing vitamins, calcium, zinc and other trace elements on a daily basis, and avoid strenuous exercise to protect our eyes.
