We used to say that we should prevent the three highs, but now we have to be careful of the fourth high, which is high uric acid. If you already have high uric acid and don't control your diet, once gout is induced, it will cause terrible pain. I'm sure you have heard of this.

I'm not trying to scare you. The prevalence of hyperuricemia in our country is as high as 13.3%, which means that 1 in 10 people suffer from hyperuricemia, and about 1/3 of them will develop gout. So what should we do if we want to stay away from gout?

If you want to stay away from gout, we'd better eat less of three types of food. The first is meat, including livestock meat, poultry meat and seafood. They are high in purine content, and fatty meat is also rich in fat and cholesterol, which will aggravate uric acid metabolism disorders, which will further increase our risk of gout.

How much meat is considered too little? If your uric acid level is not high, you can eat up to 3 liang of meat a day. If your uric acid level is high, you can only eat up to 2 liang of meat a day. To put it in a more vivid way, 2 liang of meat is roughly equivalent to 4 rolls of beef for hot pot plus a palm-sized sea bass. If you are suffering from gout, don't eat a single bite of meat.

In addition, alcohol and fructose can also increase uric acid. We are familiar with alcohol, because the alcohol metabolism process not only increases uric acid production, but also inhibits uric acid excretion. In addition, beer also contains a lot of purine, which can also increase uric acid synthesis.

But why fructose? The 2019 edition of the "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hyperuricemia and Gout in China" clearly recommends that patients with hyperuricemia and gout should limit their intake of foods containing fructose. This is because fructose can be metabolized into uric acid in the body, and there is no enzyme that limits the rate of this metabolic process. Therefore, a high-fructose diet increases uric acid very quickly, which can easily induce gout attacks.
