Counterpoint: Foldable phone display shipments to decline year-on-year in Q3 2024

The latest data from Counterpoint Research shows that year-on-year shipments of foldable phone displays fell for the first time in the third quarter of 2024, and this trend is expected to continue in 2025. The market performance of market leader Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 6 and other older foldable models did not meet expectations, resulting in Z Flip 6 panel shipments expected to be more than 10% lower than the previous year's Z Flip 5.

Although Samsung is expected to still lead the foldable smartphone panel procurement market with a 40% market share in 2024, this proportion has declined from 52% in 2023. Overall, Samsung's foldable screen panel procurement is expected to fall by more than 20%, to the lowest level since 2021.

Huawei also faces challenges in procuring foldable screen panels in the second half of 2024, with its market share falling from 30% in the second quarter to 13% in the third quarter.

This is mainly due to the fact that the Mate X6 and Pocket 3 were released later than their predecessors, and the panel procurement volume of the Mate XT was lower than expected, resulting in delayed panel shipments.

Despite this, Huawei's purchases of foldable screen panels in 2024 are still expected to increase by more than 90%, and its market share will increase from 18% to 33%.

There are currently no other brands in the market that can effectively compete with Huawei and Samsung. These two giants together account for 70% of the panel procurement market in 2023 and 2024.
