Counterpoint: China's overall smartphone sales fell 7% year-on-year in the first six weeks of 2024

At the beginning of 2024, the Chinese mobile phone market showed two completely different trends. On the one hand, Huawei was advancing by leaps and bounds, while on the other hand, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo were collectively sluggish. According to the latest China Smartphone Weekly Sales Tracking Report released by Counterpoint Research, China's overall smartphone sales fell 7% year-on-year in the first six weeks of 2024, with major manufacturers such as Apple, OPPO and vivo experiencing double-digit declines.

Specifically, OPPO fell 29%, Xiaomi fell 7%, Apple fell 24%, and vivo fell 15%.

On the other hand, Honor grew by 2%, while Huawei soared by 64%.

Counterpoint Research analysts believe that the Huawei Mate 60 series continues to attract and meet strong market demand, becoming one of the few bright spots at the beginning of this year.

There are several reasons why Apple's iPhone sales have not performed well in the first few weeks of this year. Mengmeng Zhang, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, said:

" First, it faces fierce competition from the strong return of Huawei in the high-end market, and is squeezed by aggressive pricing from manufacturers such as OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi. Although the iPhone 15 is an excellent device, it has no significant upgrade compared to the previous version, so consumers are not willing to change their phones for the time being."

Overall growth is expected to continue to be negative in the first quarter of 2024 due to weak consumer spending and fewer new product launches.
