Edelman: 81% of people who took a photo in the past three months used a mobile phone

Most American consumers use smartphones, with eMarketer predicting that smartphone penetration in the U.S. will reach 51.8% this year. Mobile phone users are using this versatile device to replace digital cameras.

According to a study conducted by Edelman for Shutterfly in August 2014, mobile phones and smartphones are the most used devices for taking photos in the United States. Of the respondents who took more than 10 digital photos in the last three months, 81% used a mobile phone. Meanwhile, 55% used a point-and-shoot digital camera, which was the second most used device. People who use smartphones to take photos take more frequently. Among those who use smartphones to take photos, four in ten take photos every day, and 24% take several photos every day. 36% control their urge to take photos all the time and only take photos a few times a week.

It’s not just photos that have moved from cameras to smartphones, but also videos. An August 2014 Animoto survey found that Internet users use smartphones to shoot videos more frequently than digital cameras. More than 40% of US Internet users said they shoot personal videos with their smartphones several times a week (23.8%) or once a day (16.4%), compared to less than a quarter of those who do so with digital cameras. In fact, the proportion of respondents who have never shot a video with a digital camera is about the same as those who shoot several times a week or every day. Meanwhile, less than 10% of people said they have never shot a video with their smartphones.
