Globalwebindex: Apple's Mac enters its 30th year - but its overall market share is still only 4%

Almost thirty years ago today, Apple sold its first Mac. Fast forward three decades, and the device's appeal is undoubtedly strong—but how many people are actually using Macs today?
Our latest data shows that Mac had 4% of the global market share in the fourth quarter of 2013. This is a fairly large user base, but not much of an increase from the 2% share in the fourth quarter of 2011. To put this in context, about 49% of users said they were running Windows 7 on their primary computer.
However, if we look at the data on Mac's share in each region, we can see that in some countries, Mac's share is higher. The country with the highest share is Australia, where 12% of users say they use Mac most often. Similarly, Mac's share is also high in some other mature markets, including the US market share of 11%, Canada, Singapore and Sweden share of 10%.
But at the other end of the data chart, we can see that in some emerging Internet markets, the penetration rate of Mac is still surprisingly low - for example, in China, Indonesia and India, the share is only 1%. Compared with the successful promotion of Apple's iOS and iPhone, it is clear that Mac still has a long way to go to become a truly global product.
