Nielsen: Android market share increased from 40% to 43% from July to August 2011

On September 27, 2011, market research company Nielsen released a set of data showing that Google Android's market share continued to rise, but this was not due to the decline in iPhone's share.

From July to August 2011, Android's market share increased from 40% to 43%, iPhone remained at 28% for both months, and Microsoft Windows Phone (classified as "other") fell from 13% to 11%.

BlackBerry also fell one percentage point to 18%, but data shows that the new BlackBerry 7 (including Bold 9900 and 9930) released in August may have saved a lot of market share for BlackBerry.

The report also shows that in the past three months, 56% of buyers chose the Android platform, 28% chose the iPhone, 9% chose BlackBerry, and 6% chose "other" (mainly Windows Phone). At the same time, a considerable number of buyers remained on the sidelines throughout the summer, waiting for the release of BlackBerry 7 in August or Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) in October.

Apple did not release a new iPhone in the summer this year as usual. With the release of the new generation iPhone 5 in October this year, Apple's market share is likely to increase again, while Android may decline. In particular, support for Sprint will directly break the monopoly of the Android platform on that network.

Nielsen researchers said that smartphones have become the dominant force in the US mobile phone market. Today, smartphone users account for 43% of the total number of users. With the help of the upcoming iPhone 5 and Galaxy S II, this number is expected to exceed 50%.
