Rhabdomyolysis is not a disease

Human muscles are divided into three main categories: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle and smooth muscle. Striated muscle refers to skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle. As a "power" muscle, striated muscle is one of the main types of human muscle.

The so-called "rhabdomyolysis" is actually the destruction of skeletal muscle cells due to certain factors, which releases a substance called "myoglobin" into the blood. Myoglobin breaks down into certain toxic substances, which may block kidney tissue and cause renal failure.

"Rhabdomyolysis" is not a disease, but a clinical syndrome with similar manifestations, and its causes vary. The most typical manifestations are muscle pain, weakness, and strong tea-like or soy sauce-colored urine. Serious life-threatening situations may also occur, such as acute renal failure, arrhythmia, heart failure, liver failure, etc.

Some media reports point the cause of rhabdomyolysis to crayfish. However, there is no necessary connection between rhabdomyolysis and crayfish. Its causes cover more than 100 types in 39 categories, including strenuous exercise, excessive alcohol, and taking lipid-lowering drugs such as atorvastatin.

Wang Silu, a senior national food inspector and internal auditor of China's HACCP food system, said that there is currently insufficient evidence to prove that "eating crayfish will definitely induce rhabdomyolysis syndrome." Strictly speaking, crayfish can only be considered a "suspect" of causing the disease, and its "evidence of crime" is not sufficient, but it cannot completely clear itself of suspicion.

Most rhabdomyolysis symptoms are mild

Xu Siyuan, attending physician of the emergency department of Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, said that judging from the cases of "rhabdomyolysis" that the emergency department of the hospital has received in recent years:

● Most of the cases are mild, and for some patients the symptoms can be relieved by simply getting more rest and drinking more water.

● For some (patients) with more serious symptoms, if they are discovered in time and sent to the doctor early, they usually only need to replenish fluids to dilute the blood, which helps to excrete damaged muscle cells from the body, protect kidney function, and relieve symptoms.

● Cases with the most severe symptoms, such as renal damage or even failure, are rare in clinical practice and often require hemodialysis for treatment.

To prevent rhabdomyolysis syndrome, Wang Silu gave the following suggestions:

● First of all, exercise should be moderate and gradual. Warm up before exercise and replenish water and electrolytes during exercise.

● Secondly, pay attention to drug factors. Rhabdomyolysis syndrome caused by wrong use of drugs is not uncommon in clinical practice, so you must follow the doctor's instructions and take the medicine in the right amount and on time.

Excessive exercise can be judged in this way. For example, if you can talk to people while running and your heart does not feel overloaded, then it is a healthy amount of exercise. When exercising, if you feel pain in a certain part of your body, you should reduce the number of exercises and the range of motion. For beginners, the time for aerobic exercise should be controlled within 15 to 20 minutes.
