Noodles are increasingly being demonized! Can eating noodles really make you fat?

According to the Buenos Aires Economic News Network in Argentina on March 1, noodles are constantly being demonized by us, but nutritionists have different opinions on this.

Noodles are increasingly being demonised: they make people fat, should not be consumed at the same time as protein and should be avoided in the evening, the report said.

But nutritionist Laura Romano points out that there is a claim that eating carbohydrates for dinner will make you fat because they are converted into fat, but "first of all, this is not the case because it has nothing to do with day or night; secondly, this rumor is based on the idea that energy is not consumed at night, which is not the case because the body consumes energy even when sleeping."

"When you actually consume more energy than your body needs over a period of time, fat is stored, regardless of whether it's day or night," Romano said. "It's the only way the body can manage the excess food."

"Whether we consume carbohydrates, protein or fat, any of the three macronutrients that provide calories, if we eat too much, the body uses up the energy needed for metabolic processes and the rest is stored," Romano said. "'Storing fat' has nothing to do with the nutrient itself, but everything to do with consuming too much."

Marianela Aguirre Ackerman, a nutrition and diabetes medicine specialist, agrees, stressing that "the idea that carbohydrates are a 'bad' nutrient is a fallacy," adding that "each cell is a machine that needs energy to function. Carbohydrates are our main fuel."

Romano elaborated: "If the goal is to be healthy and have a suitable weight, it is recommended to control the composition of each meal to 50% vegetables, 25% carbohydrates and 25% protein. As for carbohydrates, you should try to choose high-quality carbohydrates."

“There’s a lot of focus on carbs being fattening and that you shouldn’t eat them at night, but what really matters is what type of carbs you eat, and the difference is the fiber content,” Romano said. “Simple, quickly digested foods lead to blood sugar spikes, which can make us gain weight in the long run. On the other hand, slow-digesting carbs like beans, al dente pasta, whole-wheat flour, whole grains help the body manage energy better and store less.”
