Maintaining blood pressure below 115/75 mmHg starting in early adulthood or even earlier is key to maintaining brain health, a study from Australia suggests. Researchers found that people whose blood pressure was maintained below 115/75 mmHg had a brain that was more than six months younger in middle age compared to those whose blood pressure was 135/85 mmHg. The study showed that overall, there was no significant difference in brain age (BrainAGE) between middle-aged and elderly people, with women's brains being about 10 months younger than men's. When the average blood pressure is >90 mmHg and the systolic/diastolic blood pressure is >114/74 mmHg, the brain age increases by 65.7 days and 51.1 days, respectively, for every 10 mmHg increase in blood pressure. |
