After interviewing several parents, I found out that the school meals their children eat at school are like this

As the epidemic situation gradually stabilizes, many schools have resumed classes. Judging from the current epidemic control situation, more and more schools will resume classes in the second half of the year. While parents hope that their children can resume normal campus life, they are still worried about safety issues.

Indeed, schools are places where people gather, so it becomes particularly important to improve students' immunity and protect children from viruses.

In February of this year, the National Health Commission issued the [Nutritional Dietary Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia]. "Eating well" can not only balance our nutrition, but also enhance our immunity.

So can the meals children eat at school be “nutritionally balanced”?

★★★

In May, the Hangzhou Municipal Health Commission announced the results of a nutritional survey on student lunches in Hangzhou.

The results show that although the energy can basically meet the needs of students, the energy supply structure is unreasonable.

It is mainly reflected in insufficient carbohydrates, high levels of cooking oil, livestock and poultry meat, and high fat energy supply ratio.

This is mainly because frying is more common in cooking methods, so there is an excess of fat.

In addition, whether homemade in school cafeterias or prepared by companies, the amount of salt used in student meals far exceeds the recommended amount.

In terms of food types, there is also an imbalance in supply.

For example, the staple food is mainly cereals, but whole grains, beans and potatoes are relatively scarce. Meat dishes are mainly livestock and poultry meat, especially pork, seafood, eggs, dairy products, soybeans, etc. There is a small supply of foods containing high-quality protein, the supply of dark vegetables is low, and the supply of fruits is relatively small.

In addition to the Hangzhou survey, we also collected photos and recipes of student meals in other regions from our fans. We found that some schools also have similar problems. Here are a few examples:

Possible problems with the student meals in the picture above:

Insufficient protein and carbohydrates; insufficient dark vegetables and fruits; insufficient foods containing high-quality protein such as seafood, eggs, dairy products, and soybeans.

The staple food is rice, with a lack of whole grains and beans; there is more meat from livestock and poultry (especially pork), and less food containing high-quality protein such as seafood, eggs, dairy products, and soybeans.

During this collection process, we also received some photos sent by kindergarten parents, one of which made me a little sad.

I think even those who don’t have any knowledge of nutrition would think that it is not appropriate to feed such meals to kindergarten children. . .

I really want to ask the teachers of this kindergarten: Would you feed your children such meals?

While chatting with parent fans, I found that many parents have realized the unreasonableness of student meals. Some parents have also tried to communicate with the school, but the results were not satisfactory.

For example, one parent said that his child’s school lunch did not have any fruit or milk, and the taste was heavy. Many children complained that it was a bit spicy and they could not eat it. They reported this to the school, but the school said that older children had not reported these problems, which meant that these tastes were allowed by default.

There is also a parent who still doesn't know what his child ate at school.

As this parent said, this is just a normal request of a mother who cares about her child, but the feedback received made people both worried and disappointed.

In order to guide the supply of student meals, nutrition workers from the Hangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention have compiled a set of recommended student meal examples, covering primary, junior high and high school stages.

We will take out one example each for your reference, and experience together what "nutritional balanced student meals" mean.

In fact, there are relevant standards regarding student meals.

The standard also specifies in detail "the types of food and corresponding weights that children of different age groups need to consume every day."

For example, the draft of the "Nutritional Meal Guidelines for Primary and Secondary School Students in Shenzhen" also stipulates the categories of food that are prohibited or should be used with caution in student meals.

But unfortunately, they are not mandatory standards at present, so the above situation occurs.

From the school's perspective, unified diet during the epidemic is indeed one of the more effective control methods, but can we consider the children more?

For example, many schools have psychology teachers who regularly arrange psychology courses and lectures to help solve students’ psychological discomfort.

In the future, can schools add nutrition teachers, recruit talented nutritionists, and arrange meals for students reasonably so that children can be healthier not only mentally but also physically.

When chatting with parents, I found that some schools are actually working hard to make improvements. It’s not that they don’t want to improve the food standards, but they are often defeated by reality. It’s difficult to satisfy everyone, and they are powerless.

In the face of this polarized situation, we can only hope that there can be more understanding and empathy between schools and parents. Putting aside the interests involved, our common goal is the children, right? We all hope that children can get a good education and grow up healthily.

I urge all parents to pay attention to their children’s diet and nutrition. If their children do not eat well at school, please adjust their daily nutrition through breakfast and dinner. If they eat very well at school, please give the school more praise and support!

Of course, what we hope most is that the standards will be enforced as soon as possible, which is the guarantee to eliminate the source of all problems!

I hope everyone’s efforts will not be in vain!

May the children grow up healthy!
