The staple food of young chinchillas is usually alfalfa, which is rich in nutrients and suitable for the growth of chinchillas. There is also ti grass, but fresh ti grass is more palatable than dry ti grass, and is sweeter and more delicious. Soybean leaves and sweetgrass can also be fed to chinchillas.

The food intake of an adult chinchilla is about 5% to 6% of its body weight. It eats like a squirrel, sitting up on its hind legs, grabbing food with its front legs, and putting it into its mouth bit by bit.

How to teach your chinchilla to use a striker kettle

The owner presses the water outlet of the water dispenser with his hand to make water drip on his hand. Then put the wet hand on the chinchilla's mouth and let it lick the water. Repeat this many times and it will know.

Or you can send it directly to the water dispenser. Chinchillas are curious animals and will touch the water dispenser by themselves. If it does not touch it, the owner can also take the chinchilla's mouth to the water outlet and touch it, and then it will know that it can drink water.

What foods can chinchillas eat?

Chinchillas can eat commercial grains and dry alfalfa as their staple food. In addition, chinchillas can also eat appropriate amounts of dried fruits, natural herbs, fruits and vegetables, such as dandelions, a small amount of apples, carrots, grass, barley grass, plantain, lettuce, special snacks for chinchillas, etc. In addition, care should be taken to avoid giving chinchillas foods with high fat, sugar and water content to prevent diarrhea.
