What are the storage methods for corn stalks?

1. Cellar storage

Choose a plot of land with high terrain, hard soil, sheltered from the wind and facing the sun, and not soaked by rainwater to dig the cellar. The size of the cellar should be determined according to the storage capacity. The shape of the cellar is best to be rectangular for easy compaction. The bottom and sides of the cellar should be covered with thick plastic film.

Fill the pit with fresh corn stalks cut into 1-3 cm long, and compact them while filling (mechanical compaction is best). If compacted manually, step on them every 30 cm. The corn stalks should be about 60 cm higher than the pit, mainly to prevent the feed in the pit from sinking during fermentation. After filling, cover it with a thick piece of plastic film, cover it with a thick layer of straw, and then compact it with 40 cm thick soil to seal the top, and polish and smooth the soil.

Note: When storing in a cellar, there should be no ventilation or water seepage in the cellar; when filling, do not allow dirt and other debris to mix in, so as not to affect or damage the quality of the feed.

There are now special silage balers on the market, which can complete the whole process from crushing to compacting and baling in one go. The only thing a person needs to do is to feed the corn stalks into the machine's feed port and store the packaged fodder properly. Farmers can buy a baler according to their needs, and either do silage for themselves or do silage for others to earn some processing fees.

One thing to note: When transporting and storing, be sure not to break the packaging film to prevent air from entering and causing the silage to deteriorate.

Why corn seedlings grow so poorly

1. The nutrients in the soil have long been absorbed and utilized by weeds, and the sloping land has been washed away by rain for many years, and the fine growth soil layer has been washed away with the water, leaving only the uncomposted raw soil layer.

2. Corn is in a critical period of fertilizer demand from germination to jointing to flowering to maturity, but the raw soil is poor in fertilizer. Even if farmyard manure is applied, it needs a process of decomposition and fertilization, and the various fertilizers such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium needed for corn growth in the season cannot be provided.

How to improve the soil environment of wasteland

1. In the past, when reclaiming wasteland in rural areas, they would simply burn the weeds on the ground into ashes, use the surface ash as fertilizer, and plow it deep into the underground soil to make the land loose. However, this traditional method has been abandoned now in order to prevent wildfires and for the sake of the overall situation.

Second, the base fertilizer should be applied in place, especially the amount of fertilizer should be sufficient. Farmyard manure plus human feces and urine, or other green manure, should be fully fermented and evenly spread on the ground. It takes a process for the raw soil to become mature soil through deep plowing and full decomposition.

3. In the first year of land reclamation, peanuts and beans are mainly planted, and potatoes and green onions can also be planted. The reason is that peanuts, soybeans and other crops have nodules on their roots, which provide fertilizer for the plants by fixing nitrogen in the air. When peanuts are harvested, the roots are disconnected and the nodules are broken, and the rhizobia return to the soil. At this time, the nitrogen left in the soil by the rhizobia is about 4 kg per mu, which is equivalent to 18 kg of standard nitrogen fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate.
