How do you know if the engine piston ring is broken? Why does the piston ring break?

Piston rings are not only used in gasoline engines such as automobiles, but also in diesel engines, compressors and steam engines. Piston rings and pistons can seal fuel gas. If they break, it will definitely affect the normal operation of the engine and thus affect the car.

How do you know if the engine piston ring is broken?

The piston and piston ring are the main components for generating power in internal combustion machinery. They generate high-pressure compression through precise movement, causing the oil mist sprayed into the combustion chamber (cylinder) to explode, pushing the piston, connecting rod, crankshaft and flywheel to complete work, and working in a continuous cycle.

The piston rings of various internal combustion engines have the same principle, but their structures are different. Some have three rings, and some have four rings, including an oil ring (at the rear) and 2 to 3 air rings (at the front of the piston). The main function of the front air ring is to seal the air gap between the cylinder and the piston to generate high pressure. The main function of the oil ring is to scrape back the oil splashed into the cylinder (it also has an auxiliary compression function). All piston rings are in normal working condition, and the machine can work with full power.

If a piston ring breaks -

In a multi-cylinder engine, if a piston ring of a cylinder is broken, it may not be noticeable and you may not feel anything if you don't pay attention. Only slight black smoke will appear in the exhaust pipe. If 2-3 rings are damaged, the black smoke will increase and the horsepower will decrease. If the oil ring is damaged at the same time, there will be black smoke, horsepower will decrease, and fuel and lubricant oil consumption will increase.

If it is a single-cylinder or two-cylinder internal combustion engine, the piston ring is damaged, the exhaust pipe emits serious black smoke, fuel consumption increases, power drops sharply, and even stalls. If these symptoms occur, stop the car to check, repair and replace the parts. Otherwise, the broken bad piston ring will scratch the cylinder, resulting in higher repair costs.

Why does the piston ring break?

① The engine air intake system (the air filter is sucked flat and rotten, the air intake rubber sleeve (pipe fitting) is worn and leaking, dust enters the cylinder wall, and the piston is pulled and the ring is broken.

② The gap between the cylinder liner and the ring becomes larger, the piston swings in the cylinder liner, the cylinder liner wears eccentrically, and the ring is subjected to uneven force and breaks.

③ The carbon deposits in the piston ring groove increase, the gap between the ring mouth becomes larger, and the cylinder liner is stuck, pulling off the piston ring.

④ The piston is worn unevenly, the cylinder liner is out of round and forms steps, and the wear exceeds the limit and the piston ring is broken.

How to install single cylinder piston ring

The piston rings of internal combustion engines are divided into air rings and oil rings. The air rings of air compressors are only two or three, and there are no oil rings. When installing piston rings, you should pay attention to the markings of the piston rings and the classification of air rings and oil rings.

Oil rings are usually combined rings or integrated rings. There are no markings on the oil rings, and they are not divided into front and back, so they can be installed at will.

The gas ring usually has 2 or 3 lines, front and back, the first and second lines are different, so it is necessary to see the markings clearly.

When installing the piston rings, it is very important that the ports of each piston ring be staggered by 120° and must be away from the position of the piston pin retaining ring, otherwise there is a possibility of leakage or breakage.
