Why does the car's engine oil become less? Will the engine oil evaporate after being left for more than a year?

The main function of automobile engine oil is to lubricate the engine. It also has other functions such as anti-corrosion, anti-rust, and cooling. Burning oil is a common fault in vehicles, and the direct impact is that the engine oil becomes less. In addition, there are other reasons for the reduction of engine oil. If you also have this question, let's learn about it together.

Why does car oil become less?

Check if there are any leaks in the engine. The valve cover gasket is a place that is prone to leaks. Also, does this situation occur in a short period of time or has been occurring all the time? If it occurs in a short period of time, did you discover it after maintenance? If it is, check if the oil pan screws are tightened and the oil filter is tightened. If it is in normal condition, check other parts of the engine and replace them in time.

A person steps on the accelerator in the cab and watches whether the exhaust pipe keeps emitting blue smoke depending on the degree of accelerator pressure. If so, the car is burning oil. This is a problem inside the engine, such as aging of the valve seal, cylinder gasket contamination, tile wear and many other problems. In this case, the engine oil will decrease with the increase of mileage.

Check the turbocharger to see if the internal intake shaft of the turbocharger is worn out. Disassemble the turbocharger and shake the internal intake shaft to see if it can shake. If it can shake back and forth, it should be that the turbocharger is broken. It is recommended to find a professional to check it, otherwise it will be difficult to distinguish whether it is the turbocharger or the engine that is burning oil.

Generally, there are two manifestations of oil burning: first, vehicles with oil burning will have varying degrees of exhaust "blue smoke" symptoms; second, oil burning in a vehicle will lead to increased carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, reduced economy and power of the vehicle, and excessive exhaust emissions, among other adverse consequences.

Will the oil evaporate after being stored for more than a year?

Among the various types of oils needed by cars, except for fuel, the others will not have serious evaporation phenomenon.

Motor oil, diesel and gasoline are all extracted from petroleum. In comparison, their physical and chemical properties are relatively stable and they do not evaporate as easily as gasoline. Motor oil will be consumed during use, and the motor oil consumption is less than 1 liter per 1,000 kilometers, which is within the acceptable range.

However, engine oil is hygroscopic. Once it combines with water, it will emulsify, causing certain damage to the vehicle.

In daily storage, the shelf life of unopened motor oil is 3-5 years, and the shelf life of opened and unused motor oil is about one year.

What happens if the car runs out of oil?

If the engine is out of oil, no oil film will form on the surface of each component. At this time, the components that rub against each other will produce hard wear. Because no matter how high-precision the processing technology is, the surface of the components cannot be truly smooth, so there must be sliding friction (rigid surface contact, no pure rolling), and friction will generate a lot of heat. Combined with the actual speed of the engine, the engine in a dry grinding state will not last long. The core meaning of engine oil is lubrication (the rest are additional functions). When the machine loses lubrication, it is not far from being scrapped. Of course, engine oil also has the uses of cleaning, cooling, sealing, etc., but these are insignificant compared to lubrication.
