In the second year of Chuping in the reign of Emperor Xian of Han, Sun Jian was ordered by Yuan Shu to attack Liu Biao, who ruled Jingzhou. Liu Biao's general Huang Zu attacked Sun Jian at night. Sun Jian was well prepared and responded calmly, repelling Huang Zu and pursuing him. He advanced on horseback in the dark and mistakenly entered the densely forested Xian Mountain, where he was ambushed and killed by Huang Zu. He was only 36 years old at the time.
