What is the cause of the rotten roots of the fan palm? How to deal with the rotten roots of the fan palm and save it

Livistona is a common plant in our lives. Because it is very easy to grow and does not take up much space, many people have one or two pots of it at home. However, for a novice grower, it is often the case that the roots rot. Here, the editor will share with you some tips on growing Livistona, hoping it will be helpful to you.

What is the cause of the rotten roots of the fan palm?

1. If the flowerpot is not sufficiently ventilated and you water it too much, the breathing of the roots of the osmanthus will become poor and the roots may rot.

2. If you want to enjoy it in a ceramic flower pot, you can also make it into a flower pot. It is best to use a Devonian pot for potted osmanthus.

3. Generally speaking, if the soil is too wet or waterlogged, it is easy to cause sweet osmanthus root rot. Basically, puddles are the most common factor in sweet osmanthus root rot.

How to deal with rotten roots of palm trees

Prune rotten roots

The fan palm likes a humid growing environment and has a certain ability to withstand water and humidity, but long-term waterlogging will cause the root rot of the fan palm. At this time, we need to remove the fan palm from the soil, wash the soil on the roots, and then use sterilized tools to clean the rotten roots of the fan palm. Then, soak the fan palm in a solution of carbendazim for disinfection, and finally place it in a cool and ventilated environment to dry the wound.

Replanting

After the wounds on the roots of the fan palm have dried, we can replant them. When planting, we'd better replace the original soil, because the original soil has rotted roots, and there will be a lot of bacteria left, which can easily cause the fan palm to rot again. If we don't have replacement soil, we need to thoroughly disinfect the previous soil before using it.

Control watering

After planting the fan palm, we need to control the amount of watering, because the roots of the fan palm have just been trimmed and its ability to absorb water is still weak. If a lot of water is used, it will easily lead to water accumulation and cause the fan palm roots to rot. If the soil is relatively dry and needs watering, we must control the amount of watering to avoid water accumulation and wait until new branches and leaves grow before maintaining it normally.

What are the maintenance methods of Livistona

Livistona prefers a warm, humid and sunny environment. It is not cold-resistant. The wintering temperature is above 3-5℃, and the optimum growth temperature is 25-35℃. It prefers loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam. It is afraid of strong light, slightly shade-tolerant, not drought-tolerant, and can tolerate short-term waterlogging. It can be propagated by sowing. The seeds are collected from strong mother plants over 20 years old, soaked in water for 3-5 days to remove the seed coat, stored in sand for germination, and sown in the seedbed after the young shoots break through the seed coat. It can germinate in 30-50 days. Use large seeds for sowing, and it can be potted after 2 years.

How to distinguish between palm trees and fan palms

1. Differentiate by size: Palm trees are only about ten meters tall, usually 3-10 meters tall. It is common for fan palm trees to grow to twenty meters tall, with a diameter of 20-30 centimeters and often swollen at the base.

2. Differentiate by appearance: Palm petioles have only many continuously distributed small blunt thorns. Palm leaves are not only small, but also have deep fissures. In normal circumstances, the ends of the fissures do not droop but stand straight. The petioles of the fan palm have sharp barbs that are separated from each other. The fan palm leaves are larger, with shallow fissures, and the tips of the fissures droop naturally. Moreover, the fibers on the stems of the fan palm are less than those of the palm, and they are easy to fall off and expose the trunk.

3. From the distribution differences, palm trees can withstand low temperatures of -10°C. They are produced in southern Shaanxi and the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River in the north, and in southern China and Vietnam in the south.
