How to prune petunias? Can long-flowered petunias be grown on the balcony?

Petunia is a very common flower plant, and if it is well cared for, the flowers will bloom and look very beautiful. Therefore, proper pruning is also important so that nutrients will not be wasted. So how to prune petunias to prevent them from growing flowers?

How to prune petunias

1. When the seedlings grow to about 10 cm, it is best to pinch them to promote the germination of their side buds and produce more flower buds. What is pinching? It means cutting off or removing the top buds. We can pinch in two places. One is to pinch the main branches. If you don't pinch, its branches will grow taller and thinner, affecting the germination of axillary buds, making it difficult to form side branches. Another way is to pinch the side branches, so that more secondary side branches can be produced, making the flower parts grow exponentially.

2. After the flowers fade, except for the necessary seed-keeping branches, other residual flowers or branches should be cut off in time, so as to promote the germination of its side branches and continuous flowering. You can top it or cut it short. Topping means cutting off the top of the main branches. Shortening means cutting off 1/2-3/4 of the tip of the branch. The old will not go, the new will not come. Only by cutting off the useless branches and leaves can new branches and leaves burst out.

When pruning petunias, you need to be bold and careful. They have strong vitality, so don't worry about pruning them causing their death. If you want to show a beautiful shape, it cannot be done in one go. You need to prune it slowly to succeed.

Can petunia be grown on the balcony?

OK.

Petunias are flowers that do not like the sun very much, but in order to maintain petunias in autumn and winter, they also need to be given enough sunlight. This is exactly the opposite of how we maintain petunias in summer. Many petunias are exposed on the balcony in summer, and the temperature is too high, which will cause the petunias to hibernate or even die. After autumn and winter, the temperature drops and the daytime maintenance time becomes shorter. Therefore, petunias need to be placed in a place with a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius and plenty of sunlight.

Generally speaking, south-facing or east-facing balconies are more suitable. It is not recommended to place them in places with insufficient sunlight. On the one hand, the growth of petunias will be severely inhibited, and it may also lead to futile growth or even no flowering. Therefore, if you want petunias to grow well and bloom more, it is best to place them on a south-facing balcony.

Petunia planting precautions

Maintenance

In winter, the temperature is low and you need to water less. Do not water unless the soil in the pot is dry. If the soil in the pot is moist for a long time, it can easily cause root rot and yellowing and leaf rot in the lower part of the plant.

Keep it in a place with sufficient light to prevent it from growing too tall.

If the indoor temperature is below 10 degrees, do not apply fertilizer until spring. If it is above 10 degrees, you can apply compound fertilizer, but do not apply fertilizer frequently.

prune

Petunia has a very long flowering period if it is properly pruned. When pruning, pay attention to the renewal of old and new branches. It has a strong ability to branch out. In order to avoid the plant being closed inside, it is necessary to prune in empty spaces. Pruning only one place will easily result in hollows. Prune off the thin and too dense branches, and keep the thick branches for flowering and future branch renewal. Do not prune the branches on the edge too much, let them continue to grow, and then they will hang down.
