What is the reason for the wilting of ivy? What can I do if the ivy wilts?

Ivy is very common in our daily life. Because it can purify the air and is highly ornamental, many people will keep one or two pots of it at home. However, the ivy becomes wilted after being kept for a while. So why does the ivy wilt? What should we do if the ivy wilts? Let's take a look.

Why is the ivy wilting?

1. Lighting

Like most green plants, ivy prefers a sunny environment and is afraid of scorching sun. When growing it indoors, it should be placed in a sunny place. Due to the rotation of the sun, it can only get two to three hours of sunlight at most. If ivy does not get sunlight all year round, it is easy for the stem nodes to elongate, the leaves to become smaller and yellow, and the branches to become weak.

2. The soil in the pot is too dry

Long-term dryness of the ivy pot soil can easily cause the leaves to wilt. Ivy likes moist soil, and the amount of watering should be determined according to the season and temperature. When the temperature is high, the pot soil evaporates quickly, and such a large pot of ivy absorbs water quickly, so water it immediately if the leaves wilt.

3. Overwatering

Long-term waterlogging in the pot soil of ivy can easily lead to root rot and wilt. Watering should be done after the pot soil is dry, so that the roots of the ivy have time to breathe air.

4. Soil

When growing indoors, due to the lack of air circulation and short light hours, we need to be more strict in choosing the soil, and choose some loose, breathable and fast-draining soil.

5. Temperature

Low indoor temperature can easily cause the leaves to wilt. When the temperature is below 5 degrees Celsius, the plants are easily frostbitten and even die.

What to do if ivy wilts

1. Improper watering, too much or too little watering will cause the leaves to wilt. Check the moisture in the pot frequently. If the soil in the pot is dry, water it in time to keep the soil in the pot and the surrounding air moist. Spray water on the leaves frequently to increase the air humidity.

2. Place the flower pots in semi-shade to prevent exposure to the sun. Although they need sunlight, avoid direct sunlight, otherwise it will easily cause the leaves to wilt and turn yellow. However, they cannot be deprived of light all day. It is best to maintain 3 hours of scattered light.

3. Change the potting soil regularly to facilitate the development of the root system, and apply dilute nitrogen fertilizer once every half a month during the growing season.

Precautions for growing ivy

1. The best soil for growing ivy is leaf humus, which is rich in sand and has good drainage, so the plants grow vigorously. I used leaf humus with half river sand to grow ivy, and it grew well. The top pot on the flower stand on the north balcony of my home grows like a waterfall. Because the space is small, the vines have nowhere to grow, so I often trim some and throw them away;

2. Ivy tolerates shade, but also likes light. It is best to have bright light in the maintenance environment. It is also okay if there is no direct light. When the light in the growing environment of ivy is bright, the leaves are darker and glossy dark green. When the light is weak, the leaves are glossy light green. Ivy cannot be placed in a dark environment for a long time, such as a bathroom with poor light.

3. Ivy likes a humid environment, and the growing environment cannot be too dry. You can often spray water around it to increase humidity. Therefore, ivy should not be maintained in a dry environment such as a bedroom;

4. Ivy is not drought-tolerant, and the soil in the pot should be kept moist all year round, but water should not accumulate. Water should be applied in time when the soil in the pot is completely dry, or even when it is not completely dry;

5. Ivy likes high humidity and high humidity, so there is no need for protection in summer. As long as it is not exposed to the sun, there will be no problem. Ivy is very cold-resistant and can safely survive the winter at temperatures above -5℃.
