What does it mean when the fetus is above the pubic region?

Many pregnant women do not know what it means when the fetal head is above the pubic area. In fact, in the late pregnancy, doctors will use B-ultrasound to check whether the fetal head is in the pelvis. If the fetal head is in the pelvis, it generally means that the pregnant woman is ready to give birth. The fetal head above the pubic area is a normal fetal position, which is conducive to choosing a natural birth. However, when choosing a natural birth, in addition to paying attention to the fetal position, you should also pay attention to factors such as labor force, birth canal and fetus.

1. What does it mean if the fetal head is above the pubic bone?

The fetal head position above the pubis is a physical examination result. In other words, the physical examination found that the fetal head is located above the mother's ischial tuberosity, which means that the head is floating and has not entered the pelvis. For primiparas, the fetal head position enters the pelvis at 36-37 weeks of gestation. For primiparas, the fetal head position often enters the pelvis later, or even at the time of labor. The fetal head position above the ischial tuberosity means that the head is floating and not inserted into the pelvis. There is no direct time relationship between whether the fetal head is in the calf and when the delivery occurs, but it is more likely to occur if the head is in the calf late or the head is not deep enough. The faster the fetal head is in the calf and the heavier it is, generally speaking, the delivery will be relatively easier, but this is not certain.

2. Time of fetal head entering the pelvis

Under normal circumstances, 80%-90% of first-time births enter the pelvis head-on at around 37 or 38 weeks of pregnancy; 10%-20% do not enter the pelvis until around the time of delivery; and some babies enter the pelvis at 33 or 34 weeks. It should be noted that even if the baby enters the uterus early, it does not mean that the birth will occur early. Some pregnant women usually have to wait until labor begins before entering the pelvis.

3. How long will it take for the baby to be born after the fetal head enters the pelvis?

Generally speaking, a first-time mother can give birth 2-3 weeks after the fetal head enters the pelvis, while a primipara often starts giving birth soon after the fetal head enters the pelvis. The relationship between pelvic engagement time and maternal delivery time is not clear. The placement of the fetus in the pelvis only indicates that the baby's fetal position and head shape match the pelvis. Some expectant mothers do not put the baby into the basin until they give birth, while others put the baby into the basin while giving birth.
