Do I need to have a uterine curettage if lochia cannot be discharged?

Do I need to have a uterine curettage if lochia cannot be discharged?

After giving birth, the elimination of lochia is usually different for different women, because the elimination of lochia is affected by women's lifestyle. This is important for women who are not in very good health. So, if lochia cannot be discharged, is it necessary to have medical abortion and uterine cleaning?

If the lochia cannot be discharged after childbirth, should I have a medical abortion followed by a uterine cleaning?

Generally, the lochia of a postpartum woman will clear up in about 40 days. If she can walk frequently, it may clear up faster. If it takes a long time and still not clean, you should go to the hospital for a physical examination to find out the reason and take effective measures based on the actual reason. It is not necessary to have a uterine curettage after medical abortion.

1. Tissue residues. It may be due to uterine malformation, uterine fibroids and other reasons, or it may be because the surgeon is not skilled in the technique, resulting in the failure to completely remove the pregnancy tissue, causing some tissue to remain in the uterine cavity. The clinical symptoms at this time include not only residual lochia, but also bleeding that is sometimes more and sometimes less, with blood clots inside, and accompanied by intermittent abdominal pain.

2. Intrauterine infection. The infection in the uterine cavity may be caused by taking a sitz bath after giving birth, using unclean sanitary napkins, having sex before the baby is one month old, or by the surgical operator not performing thorough disinfection and sterilization. At this time, the lochia has an odor, the abdomen is tender and painful, and there is fever. The red blood cell examination shows an increase in the number of white blood cells.

3. Weak uterine contractions. It may be due to the inability to rest well after giving birth, or the general physical condition is weak and sickly, or the delivery time is too long, which depletes the blood and qi, resulting in weak uterine contractions and continuous lochia after delivery.

Because the symptoms vary, the treatment methods are also different. Carefully observing the characteristics, smell, amount and duration of postpartum lochia can help you understand the recovery of the uterus and whether there is any infection. If it is accompanied by heavy bleeding, and the uterus is enlarged and soft, it often indicates that the uterus is not repaired well, so you should go to the hospital in time to ask the doctor to find out the cause of the lochia and treat it accordingly.

What are the causes of postpartum lochia discharge?

Postpartum lochia is a secretion composed of residual blood, white blood cells, mucus, etc. in the uterus after giving birth. Generally speaking, the lochia is still reddish in color 1 to 3 days after giving birth. After 4 to 10 days, the color will turn into dark red and dark brown. 11 days after giving birth, there will be no blood clots and blood, and the lochia will be light yellow. The lochia will disappear within 2 months according to this situation.

If the above process is not followed, the fetal tissue may not be completely removed after delivery, mostly due to poor uterine contractions, so the lochia cannot be completely discharged. In addition, the bleeding after giving birth is not necessarily all postpartum lochia, it may also be caused by the secretion of growth hormone by breast milk. Because breastfeeding will increase the secretion of growth hormone in milk, making the uterine wall less stable, thus there may be abnormal bleeding. Generally, 6 weeks after giving birth, the examination consists of smear and ultrasound. If the doctor confirms that it is still within the normal range, this kind of situation can be self-healing.

In addition, excessive food supplements during the confinement period can also cause excessive bleeding, and drinking "Shenghua Tang" is one of the reasons. Most hospitals will have uterotonics, so there is no need to drink Shenghua Tang. If you want to drink it, you need to drink it in moderation, otherwise it will increase the duration of postpartum bleeding. Caesarean section is more necessary because doctors eliminate it completely.
