Why is there bleeding during intercourse after wearing the IUD?

Inserting an IUD is a relatively reliable method of contraception and is a very good choice for women who are already pregnant. Although inserting an IUD is a very simple minimally invasive surgery, there are still some things to pay attention to before and after the insertion. So, how long does it take to have sex after having an IUD? What is the reason for bleeding during sex after having an IUD? Why is there bleeding during sex after having an IUD?

What is the reason for bleeding during intercourse after inserting the IUD? Why is there bleeding during intercourse after inserting the IUD?

Bleeding during intercourse within a short period of time after the insertion of the IUD is because the uterine wall is scratched when the IUD is placed. The bleeding usually lasts for several days, and the blood volume does not exceed the menstrual volume, so no solution is needed. If the ring is inserted in the first half of the menstrual cycle, because the uterine wall is in the metabolic period, the endometrium is hypertrophic, and the blood vessels are rich and colorful, bleeding may be more. Therefore, the ring should be inserted within 3-7 days after the menstrual period ends.

After having an IUD inserted, some women will experience increased menstruation, some have prolonged and unclean menstruation, and some have mixed secretions with heavy flow. Scientific research has shown that this is because the IUD irritates the uterine wall, causing chemical changes in the tissue, leading to local coagulation disorder. The incidence of bleeding is also related to the material of the IUD. Plastic and copper IUDs have a higher incidence of bleeding, while metal rings have a lower incidence, and contain the lowest progesterone content.

If the uterine wall is thicker when the contraceptive ring is inserted, and the patient's physical condition is not very good, the stimulation of the ring may increase postoperative bleeding. However, if the IUD is inserted in the second half of the cycle or close to the menstrual period, the thickness of the endometrium can cause menstrual-like bleeding.

In addition, experts emphasize that most people will continue to experience increased menstrual flow after having an IUD inserted. This is also one of the side effects of the IUD contraceptive method. The reason is that inserting the IUD will activate the plasminogen activator in the uterine blood circulation system and promote the production of chemical fibers involved in blood circulation and blood coagulation.

Common problems after IUD insertion

1. There may be a small amount of vaginal bleeding and lower abdominal discomfort after insertion, which will mostly disappear on their own; the main complication of intrauterine contraceptive ring insertion is bleeding. The clinical symptoms are excessive menstrual flow, prolonged menstrual periods, and non-menstrual bleeding during menstrual periods. Generally speaking, there will always be bleeding after the ring is placed, but it will not exceed a week. If the bleeding lasts for more than a week, or the bleeding is as much as the menstrual period, it is considered an abnormal reaction. If you have heavy bleeding, abdominal pain, or fever, you should go to a medical clinic for treatment.

2. Do not do heavy physical work within a week; stay in bed and rest within three days. Exerting too much can cause bleeding and inflammation.

3. Sitz baths, sexual intercourse, food, clothing, housing and transportation are strictly prohibited within half a month after the operation.

4. Within 3 months after insertion, pay attention to less activity and avoid strenuous activities, including long-term walking around, long-term sitting, standing, etc. If the menstrual flow is likely to increase, you should pay attention to whether the contraceptive ring falls off during the menstrual period. Do not have sex or take a sitz bath if there is vaginal bleeding.

5. If any of the following conditions occur, go to the hospital for treatment immediately: severe abdominal pain, fever, pelvic pain, increased female secretions; menstrual period has not stopped or there is a possibility of pregnancy; the IUD falls off; pain during sexual intercourse; excessive bleeding or non-menstrual bleeding or bleeding that does not stop.
