What is low progesterone?

Expectant mothers may be unfamiliar with the term progesterone value, but they may often hear it from doctors. Generally speaking, progesterone levels directly affect the mother's body and the growth and development of the fetus. If the mother lacks progesterone levels, it will cause great harm to the body and easily cause miscarriage. What is the reason for low progesterone?

Causes of low progesterone during pregnancy

1. Insufficient luteal function

Insufficient endocrine function refers to the insufficient endocrine function of the corpus luteum produced by the uterus and ovaries after ovulation, resulting in insufficient estrogen metabolism, insufficient metabolic conversion of the uterine wall, ovulatory dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and unfavorable implantation of the embryo combined with sperm and egg, which can cause infertility or habitual abortion. As for the causes of low progesterone levels during pregnancy, most of the low progesterone levels are caused by women’s luteal insufficiency, resulting in insufficient progesterone metabolized by progesterone. During a normal pregnancy, the increase in progesterone levels can prevent the test tube embryo from being rejected by the pregnant mother and maintain the pregnancy. If the progesterone level is not high enough, the test tube embryo will seem like a foreign body and will be resisted by the pregnant mother, leading to miscarriage. If low progesterone levels occur during pregnancy, it is recommended to go to the hospital immediately for medical treatment and receive targeted and reasonable treatment under the guidance of a doctor.

2. Endocrine and nervous system dysfunction

That is endocrine imbalance. The body has an endocrine system that metabolizes various hormones and works with the central nervous system to regulate the body's metabolism and endocrine system. Under normal circumstances, the balance of various hormones remains stable. If this balance is disturbed for some reason (too much or too little of a certain hormone), it will lead to endocrine disorder and cause corresponding clinical symptoms. Among them, the biggest impact on pregnant women is the disease that causes low progesterone.

3. Uterine development disorder

The ovarian cortex is composed of an oocyte and many small and medium-sized oocytes around it. According to the changes in shape and function of the uterus during development, it can be divided into three stages: initial egg, developing egg and mature follicle. Women's initial eggs are precious. A newborn baby will have 700,000 to 2 million initial eggs in the uterus and ovaries on both sides, and about 40,000 initial eggs by puberty. Ultrasound imaging provides an effective method for examining uterine development and the presence or absence of ovulation, and can more accurately diagnose abnormalities in uterine development and various ovulation disorders. The most common abnormalities in clinical medicine are hypoplasia of the uterus and absence of uterus, both of which lead to low progesterone levels during pregnancy.

4. Insulin resistance

Insulin resistance refers to the fact that due to various reasons, the efficiency of glargine insulin in promoting glucose uptake and utilization is reduced. The body compensatory metabolism of glargine insulin leads to hyperglargineuria in order to maintain stable blood sugar levels. Insulin resistance can lead to metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
