Should stitches be removed during normal childbirth?

Natural childbirth is a way of natural delivery, and natural childbirth may require stitches. However, with the continuous improvement of modern medicine, the thread used for stitches during natural childbirth is generally absorbable and can be absorbed into the human body. It will not cause damage to the female private parts. After natural childbirth, women need to pay more attention to their physical health and care, and pay more attention to cleanliness.

Should stitches be removed during a normal delivery?

The episiotomy suture for normal delivery is performed after the fetus and placenta are completely delivered. It is usually sutured layer by layer, from the female private mucosa-subcutaneous tissue-skin. In the first two sutures, absorbable sutures are generally used. The outermost suture can be sutured with either absorbable or non-absorbable sutures. If non-absorbable sutures are used, they need to be removed before discharge.

Therefore, whether the stitches need to be removed after episiotomy depends on the choice of the outermost suture. The skin outside the episiotomy wound during normal delivery is sutured with silk thread, and the incision usually heals and the stitches are removed in five or six days. The wound inside the female private parts is sutured with catgut, which is quickly absorbed by the body and will not remain in the female private parts, so it does not need to be removed.

Absorbable sutures are surgical sutures that are sewn inside human wounds and can be absorbed by the body without the need for removal. Medical gut sutures are divided into ordinary gut and chromic gut, both of which are absorbable. The time required for absorption depends on the thickness and tissue of the intestinal thread. Generally, it takes 6-20 days for complete absorption.

The birth canal injury during natural childbirth can be judged according to the different degrees of injury. Minor abrasions of the mucosa can heal quickly by suturing the epidermis and mucosa. If there is a more serious perineal tear, such as a first, second, third or even fourth degree tear, the sutures should be performed in layers according to the degree of the tear.

Nowadays, sutures are generally made of absorbable catgut, so there is no need to routinely remove the sutures after surgery. It also depends on the degree of wound tearing. Sometimes, if the wound tear is deep, further examination is required to determine the wound healing situation. Seventy-two hours after delivery, the episiotomy wound and the sutures of the lacerated wound should be checked routinely. If the wound heals well, the patient can be discharged on time.
