Will edema during pregnancy cause weight gain?

Will edema during pregnancy cause weight gain?

During pregnancy, many pregnant women will "suffer" from edema. However, some pregnant women are not concerned about how the edema is caused, but whether the edema will increase their weight? Although this issue seems to make pregnant women care about weight loss, it is indeed an issue worthy of concern.

Will edema in pregnant women increase weight?

Usually, if a pregnant woman is edematous, she will gain weight under normal circumstances, but the weight gain is usually around 1-2 pounds. After the pregnant woman gives birth, it will be more difficult for her to take care of the baby, so the weight will gradually decrease. However, if it exceeds the normal value and gains weight too quickly, it may be harmful to the fetus. At this time, pregnant women need to go to the hospital for a check-up to see if their blood pressure is normal.

Generally speaking, there are two reasons for edema in pregnant women:

1. Pregnant women accumulate a lot of water in their bodies, which cannot be metabolized out, so it will be deposited in the tissues, causing edema.

2. Because the uterus of a pregnant woman enlarges during pregnancy, the veins are compressed, causing obstruction of venous return.

3. Edema caused by high blood pressure. The blood volume of pregnant women increases, and the increase in blood is greater than the increase in blood cells, so the blood components will be relatively diluted, which makes it easy for the water in the blood to penetrate into the interstitial fluid and cause edema of the lower limbs.

How to reduce edema in pregnant women

When pregnant women experience edema, it usually occurs in the arms and feet. At this time, pregnant women can follow the following methods to gradually reduce edema, but it cannot completely eliminate it from the source, it can only be said to have a certain auxiliary effect.

1. Lie down and stretch your legs, or try to raise your feet a little when sitting. This posture is helpful to increase the driving force of venous blood return, and use the effect of inertia to send the blood from the feet to the heart, which will naturally reduce edema.

2. Walk around and climb stairs. The process of walking can also promote blood circulation, and repeatedly doing step exercises on the stairs can also have such an effect.

3. Regular foot massage and hand massage, especially in the morning or before going to bed, can promote blood circulation.

If the pregnant woman is still uneasy, she can go to the hospital for examination and listen to what the doctor says. Especially for pregnant women with a history of hypertension, it is best to check whether there are other problems.
