How long does artificial insemination take?

Artificial insemination refers to the combination of egg and sperm through medical methods. Artificial conception requires the removal of sperm or egg and cultivation through medical methods. When the cultured embryo is successfully implanted into the human body, artificial insemination is completed. Generally, artificial insemination requires about 48 hours before ovulation or 12 hours after ovulation, and requires cultivation for about 2-5 days.

How long does artificial insemination take?

Artificial insemination is most likely to succeed within 48 hours before ovulation to 12 hours after ovulation. Each woman can undergo artificial insemination three times in a menstrual cycle, starting three days before ovulation. If calculated by hours, it means once 72 hours, 24 hours before ovulation, and 24 hours after ovulation. If conception fails in one menstrual cycle, several cycles can be performed in succession. If necessary, drugs can be used to induce ovulation and adjust the ovulation period to increase the pregnancy rate. The success or failure of artificial insemination is generally determined by 12 cycles. Finding the best time can increase the success rate of artificial insemination.

What is artificial insemination?

Artificial insemination is the process of removing sperm or eggs from the body, processing or culturing them into embryos, and then implanting them into the human body. The most familiar one is "test tube baby". In fact, the simplest sperm washing combined with intrauterine insemination is also a type of artificial insemination.

For patients with mild infertility, such as mild poor sperm motility, immune infertility caused by antisperm antibodies, and reproductive system diseases, artificial insemination treatment can have a 50% successful pregnancy rate. Even patients with severe oligospermia or azoospermia still have a chance of fertility through sperm microinjection.

The process of artificial insemination

The couple first needs to use equipment in the egg retrieval room and sperm retrieval room to remove eggs and sperm, put them into test tubes respectively, clean them in the laboratory, and complete the fertilization process on a glass dish.

The experimenters will select the best sperm and eggs under a microscope and place them into an incubator for culture. After 18 hours, the sperm and eggs will combine freely. During each artificial insemination, medical staff will cultivate about 10 embryos, and 2 to 3 embryos will be transplanted depending on the patient's age, whether she has been pregnant before, and the quality of the embryos.

If the sperm is not strong enough to complete fertilization in the culture vessel, the doctor will give the sperm a helping hand and send it into the egg to turn it into a fertilized egg.

The embryo survives in the culture dish for 3 to 5 days and is then transplanted into the mother's uterus. The rest of the pregnancy proceeds just like a natural one until normal delivery. If the patient is under 35 years old and undergoing IVF for the first time, a maximum of 2 implants can be made. For those over 35, only three embryos can be deposited, and the extra embryos will be frozen. If the previous embryo transfer fails, the frozen embryo can be thawed, revived, and transplanted a second time.

If all the implanted embryos develop well, according to relevant requirements, technology must be used to reduce the number of fetuses to reduce the chance of triplets or twins.
