Precautions after egg retrieval surgery

Precautions after egg retrieval surgery

After a woman starts her menstrual period, her uterus begins to produce eggs, which can combine with sperm to form a fertilized egg. Women can donate eggs to hospitals, or they may have their eggs retrieved for in vitro fertilization. Regardless of the reason, egg retrieval will greatly damage the woman's uterus and will also damage the body. Therefore, women must pay attention to taking care of their bodies after the egg retrieval surgery. Let's learn about the precautions after the egg retrieval surgery.

1. Bathing and swimming are prohibited after egg retrieval, but showering is allowed. Keep the vulva clean to prevent infection. Avoid riding electric bikes, motorcycles and strenuous activities. Increase your rest time and continue your daily life as normal. Some patients may experience dull pain and discomfort in the lower abdomen within 3 days after egg retrieval, which is normal. If severe abdominal pain and heavy bleeding occur, you need to come to the hospital for a follow-up visit.

2. Those who have retrieved more than 6 eggs need to wear tight underwear, and those who have retrieved ≥20 eggs need to follow the doctor's advice and wear a belly band (including when sleeping at night). Tight underwear should be worn for at least one month to avoid overfilling of the bladder and sudden changes in body position (especially when turning around, going to the toilet, bending over, getting up) to prevent ovarian torsion (manifested by sudden abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, anal distension, etc.). At the same time, drink plenty of water and pay attention to the occurrence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), the main manifestations of which are gastrointestinal discomfort, abdominal distension, difficulty breathing and decreased urine volume. OHSS is a self-limiting disease, and symptoms often begin to worsen 3 to 4 days after egg retrieval. If you are not pregnant, the symptoms will gradually ease around the 6th to 7th day after egg retrieval; if you are pregnant, the symptoms will worsen again around the 10th to 11th day after egg retrieval and may last for 2 to 3 weeks. Severe cases require hospitalization.

3. According to the doctor's instructions, the couple should go to the hospital 3 days after egg retrieval to learn about the embryo condition and transplantation.

Be careful to avoid ascites and strenuous exercise:

1. After the egg retrieval operation, there will be a small amount of exudate around the ovaries, which may cause mild abdominal pain, back pain and other discomforts, so you should rest in bed for 1-2 days.

2. Because the ovaries are larger than usual during the ovulation cycle, in order to prevent ovarian torsion, daily activities such as turning over and going to the toilet should be light, slow and steady.

3. Avoid strenuous activities, bathing, sexual intercourse, and vaginal douching.

4. Please use the medicine as directed by your doctor.

5. If you experience sudden severe abdominal pain, fever, or vaginal bleeding, please seek medical attention immediately.

6. Eat more high-protein foods, such as milk, fish soup, etc., to prevent the occurrence of OHSS.
