Diarrhea before menstruation is called menstrual diarrhea, which is often related to the imbalance of hormones in women during menstruation. However, traditional Chinese medicine believes that diarrhea during menstruation is often related to spleen and kidney deficiency. The spleen is weak and the spleen's function of transporting water and moisture is abnormal, so diarrhea occurs. TCM explains the causes of menstrual diarrhea

Spleen deficiency type: manifested as loose stools, or edema of the face and limbs, abdominal distension, pale red tongue, white and greasy tongue coating, loss of appetite, fatigue, heavy menstrual flow, light and thin menstrual blood, and a soft and slow pulse during or before menstruation. The prescription used is Shenling Baizhu Jianpi Decoction. This recipe has the effects of strengthening the spleen and replenishing qi, eliminating dampness and regulating menstruation.

Kidney deficiency type: manifested as dizziness, tinnitus, cold limbs and fear of chills, diarrhea during menstruation, or diarrhea in the early morning, soreness in the waist and sacrum, light-colored menstruation, clear and thin menstrual blood, white and moist tongue coating, and slow pulse.

What should not be eaten during menstruation when having diarrhea

Raw and cold foods: those referred to as cold foods in traditional Chinese medicine, such as pears, bananas, water chestnuts, stone ear, stone flower, and ground ear. Most of these foods have the effects of clearing away heat and detoxifying, nourishing yin and reducing fire. They are beneficial to the human body when consumed on a normal basis, but you should try not to eat them or eat less of them during the menstrual period, otherwise it will easily cause symptoms such as dysmenorrhea and irregular menstruation.

Spicy foods: such as cinnamon, prickly ash, cloves, pepper, etc. These foods are all condiments. In normal times, when cooking, adding some peppers to the dishes can make the dishes taste better. However, women during their menstrual period should not eat these spicy and irritating foods, otherwise it may easily lead to dysmenorrhea, excessive menstrual bleeding and other symptoms.

Foods that affect function: water chestnut, wild rice stem, wax gourd, kale, bracken, rabbit meat, black fungus, and hemp kernel.
