What is vaginismus?

A harmonious sex life is very important for both husband and wife. It can not only increase the feelings between husband and wife, but also lead to family harmony. However, many women experience vaginal spasm during sex. Generally, this situation will not only affect the sex life, but also put women under great mental pressure. If the sex life is not harmonious for a long time, it will seriously affect the relationship between husband and wife.

What is vaginismus?

Vaginismus is a type of female sexual dysfunction, commonly known as vaginal cramps. It mainly refers to the involuntary, intense and continuous contraction of the vagina and pelvic floor muscles during sexual intercourse.

When the penis or any other object is inserted into the vagina, the muscles in the lower 1/3 of the vagina will experience involuntary spasmodic contraction, preventing the penis from entering and making sexual intercourse impossible, or causing severe pain when entering, making it difficult to thrust the penis, and unable to be withdrawn after insertion.

The severity of vaginismus varies greatly. In severe cases, the adductor muscles of the thighs may also contract spasmodically, making sexual intercourse impossible. In mild cases, the penis may cause severe pain to the woman when inserted.

Although vaginismus makes it impossible to have normal sexual intercourse, people still have normal sexual desire and sexual excitement responses, and still feel pleasure and satisfaction from sexual activities other than intercourse.

What to do with female vaginismus?

Usually the spasm is limited to the muscles around the vaginal opening, but sometimes it manifests as a tightening of all the vaginal muscles, causing abnormal sensations in the vulva, inner thighs and lower abdomen. Any stimulation of these areas will aggravate the vaginal spasm. As a result, patients develop a fear of penile insertion, and even insertion of their own fingers can cause spasms. So, what should you do when you experience vaginismus?

When vaginismus occurs, if you rush to stop having sex, it will be more painful because the vagina is still contracting. The first aid method at this time is: the man should gently and compassionately encourage the woman not to panic.

Then breathe with your abdomen, take a normal position, raise your legs, and then you can finish. Because this position is the same as the birthing position, the vagina can relax naturally.

If it is caused by malformation or disease of the reproductive organs, vaginismus can be relieved by treating and improving these causes. Otherwise, vaginismus will continue to exist and will be intensified by the pain caused by trying to have sexual intercourse again.

If vaginismus is mainly caused by psychological factors or improper sexual intercourse, both husband and wife should learn about sexual knowledge and, if necessary, undergo vaginal dilation treatment with the assistance of a doctor.

Vaginal dilation therapy does not really involve using a dilator to "expand the vagina to make it wide and loose", but is mainly to confirm the vagina's capacity to accommodate and enhance confidence. Vaginal dilation treatment can be demonstrated by a doctor first.

Before dilation, the doctor first asks the patient to do pelvic muscle tension-relaxation exercises. During relaxation, the doctor gently inserts a lubricated dilator or a finger wearing a sterile glove into the vagina.

When the patient has mastered the technique, she can go home and do the dilation herself or with the help of her husband, 3-4 times a day, each time for 10-15 minutes, increasing the size of the dilator every day until the dilator reaches No. 4 (No. 4 dilator is similar to the diameter of the penis) or two fingers can enter the vagina without pain. Then the couple can start experimenting with sexual intercourse.

When starting to experiment with sexual life, the husband should pay attention to suppressing his urgent sexual impulses. First, he should give the woman sufficient caressing, and when she reaches a certain level of sexual excitement, he should slowly insert the penis into her vagina. Moreover, the thrusting should be slow, gentle, and with small amplitude. If the woman can no longer tolerate it, he should stop immediately.

It is best to choose the woman on top position, with the woman guiding the penis and controlling the movements. Through the above treatment, most patients can be cured and gradually establish a normal sex life, allowing couples to share the happiness of sex.

If women complain about genital or intercourse pain, men should not blame them for sweeping it off. Instead, take it slow, use lubrication, give her hugs and caresses all over her body, and encourage her to see her doctor. If these do not solve the problem, then, as a couple, it is best to consult a sex therapist together.
