What is the normal progesterone level?

What is the normal progesterone level?

Progesterone is often called progesterone. It is a pure natural progestogen secreted by the ovaries. It is very important for both normal people and pregnant women. If a normal person has low progesterone levels, it will affect fertility if it is not adjusted in time. If the progesterone level of a pregnant woman is low, she needs to receive timely fetal preservation treatment. Pregnant women with low progesterone levels have the risk of miscarriage. So what is the normal progesterone value?

What is the normal progesterone level?

The level of progesterone varies significantly at different times in a woman's life. There are also certain fluctuations during the day, usually higher in the early morning than in the afternoon, and this difference is even greater during adolescence.

In non-pregnant women, progesterone is secreted in large quantities by the corpus luteum of the ovary only in the second half of each menstrual cycle. It is also secreted by the brain, liver, and adrenal glands. Progesterone levels are lowest before ovulation, begin to rise after ovulation, and are highest during the luteal phase. Before ovulation, the progesterone level in body fluids should be less than 2 ng/mL, and after ovulation it should be greater than 5 ng/mL.

Starting from the third month of pregnancy, that is, after the placenta is formed, the placenta can also secrete a large amount of progesterone. The hormones secreted by the placenta will increase the progesterone level in the pregnant woman's body to 100-200 ng/ml, which is dozens to hundreds of times that of non-pregnant women.

After childbirth, the placenta is delivered and the woman loses the placenta as a source of hormones. The levels of progesterone and estrogen in the body will drop sharply, leading to physiological amenorrhea in lactating women.

The following are the specific values of normal progesterone levels:

Follicular phase: 0.6-1.9nmol/L,

Ovulation period: 1.1-11.2nmol/L,

Luteal phase: 20.8-103.0nmol/L

Early pregnancy blood progesterone: 63.6-95.4nmol/l

Blood progesterone in mid-pregnancy: 159-318nmol/l

Blood progesterone in late pregnancy: 318-1272nmol/l

Progesterone test time

Progesterone testing should be done at different times depending on individual circumstances.

For progesterone testing for pregnant women preparing for pregnancy, it is recommended to check the progesterone level in the follicular phase 2-3 days during menstruation.

If you want to confirm pregnancy, it is generally more accurate to test from the first day of menstruation to around the 20th day, because around 20 days is usually the luteal phase after ovulation, and progesterone should reach a high level at this time. If progesterone has not increased after about 20 days, it means that there is no ovulation or the progesterone level is too low, which may lead to early miscarriage.

As a prenatal checkup after pregnancy, the first checkup is best performed within the first three months of pregnancy, so that possible problems can be discovered in time. You can go for a check-up at any time during pregnancy, and then check again the next day. You can compare the two HCG and progesterone values. However, for women who have experienced miscarriage or have irregular menstruation before pregnancy, they need to do a progesterone test earlier.
