Can I add powdered milk to breast milk?

Breast milk is a common type of milk used to feed babies. Of course, when breastfeeding their babies, many people will choose to add milk powder to their babies. In fact, this is possible, and this method is called mixed feeding. Mixed feeding is also a better feeding method. Of course, there are some things to pay attention to during the feeding process. Next, I will introduce to you some precautions for mixed feeding!

1. Try not to give up breastfeeding

Mixed feeding allows your baby to eat as much breast milk as possible, and at the same time, if the total amount of milk is insufficient, ensure that he consumes enough milk without affecting his normal growth and development. If the baby can eat breast milk several times a day, it will have many benefits to his health, such as improving immunity, reducing allergies, and establishing a good parent-child relationship.

Since breast milk is most beneficial to the baby's health, try not to give up breastfeeding during mixed feeding. If you can let your baby suck your nipple more often, maintain a happy mood, have firm confidence, and pay attention to your own nutrition, you can probably continue breastfeeding.

Even if your baby doesn't refuse a bottle, it's recommended that you don't rely too much on formula too early. If done correctly, mixed feeding can be temporary and once you have enough breast milk, you won't need to add formula.

2. Feed regularly

It is best for breastfed babies to feed on demand, while formula-fed babies can eat according to a fixed schedule, so when you are mix-feeding your baby, you should also pay attention and try to feed them on a regular basis. After adding formula milk, the baby's feeding interval will be extended by 0.5 to 1 hour compared to breastfeeding. Regular eating is beneficial to the baby's nutrient absorption. Although the amount of milk your baby eats each time will vary slightly, the time interval will basically not change much.

3. Proper hydration

For babies one or two months old, if the mother has sufficient milk, they generally do not need additional water even if they are mixed-fed. But if the weather is hot or dry, consider giving your baby some water. Like formula-fed babies, mixed-fed babies usually need to rehydrate between feedings. Babies one or two months old only need to drink a small amount of boiled water, 10 to 20 ml is enough. You can feed with a bottle or a spoon.
