What to do if a pregnant woman is positive for Chlamydia

A positive Chlamydia test indicates that the body is infected with Chlamydia. This infection has a great impact on ordinary people. If a pregnant woman is infected, it may also endanger the growth and development of the fetus, and in severe cases may even cause deformities. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the situation as soon as possible, treat the symptoms, and minimize the harm. So, what should a pregnant woman do if she tests positive for chlamydia? Let’s take a look below.

Chlamydia is a pathogen that survives in the human body for a long time and spreads widely. It is a conditionally pathogenic bacterium. Under certain conditions, it can cause cervical infection, premature birth, miscarriage, urinary tract infection and other diseases, especially when combined with other pathogens such as gonococci, it aggravates the development of the disease and causes other complications. Chlamydia trachomatis is often found in asymptomatic cervix and male and female urinary systems, and its detection rate varies.

Studies have shown that after chlamydia infection, the vertical transmission rate of Chlamydia trachomatis through vaginal delivery is between 50% and 60%. In addition, if chlamydia infection is not treated, there is a possibility of premature birth, premature rupture of membranes, stillbirth, puerperal fever or postpartum endometritis. The fetus may suffer from chlamydial conjunctivitis, trachoma, chlamydial pneumonia, and in severe cases, blindness. Therefore, women in late pregnancy with untreated cervical chlamydia infection should not give birth vaginally, and some people advocate cesarean section for such patients.

If this happens, you should first undergo necessary examinations. Chlamydia can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, and the sexual partners of confirmed patients should also undergo corresponding examinations and treatment. However, one cannot determine that the other person is infected simply based on yellow urine and secretions, because a major feature of chlamydia infection is that most male and female patients have no symptoms. Erythromycin is still the first choice for the treatment of chlamydia infection. The general treatment plan is to take erythromycin orally 4 times a day, 500 mg each time, and a course of treatment is 7 days.
