Why am I always thirsty during breastfeeding?

During breastfeeding, many friends will feel thirsty. If this situation continues, you should pay attention, because it may be a symptom of certain diseases. There are many reasons for thirst, such as diabetes, normal physiological phenomena, hyperthyroidism, etc., so persistent thirst should be checked in time.

1. Postpartum thirst

It is generally normal to feel thirsty during breastfeeding because during childbirth, the mother's body loses a lot of body fluids, such as blood, sweat, saliva, etc., and the mother is prone to sweating after childbirth. After a large amount of body water is lost, it will transmit signals to the brain through the central nervous system, causing a feeling of thirst. The hormones released during breastfeeding will cause the mother to have dry mouth.

2. Breastfeeding

Another major reason for feeling thirsty during breastfeeding is breastfeeding. Because breast milk is composed of water and a variety of nutrients, 700-800 ml can be produced every day. Therefore, during breastfeeding, there will be more "loss" of water, which will make mothers feel thirsty often, and therefore they especially need to replenish a lot of water.

3. Suffering from diabetes

If a breastfeeding mother experiences unbearable dry mouth and weight loss while breastfeeding, she should consider whether she has diabetes, because many diabetic patients will have a sharp increase in urine output due to high blood sugar. At this time, despite drinking a lot of water, you will still feel thirsty, and experience "increased drinking, increased eating, increased urination, and weight loss".

4. Suffering from hyperthyroidism

If the mother suffers from hyperthyroidism during breastfeeding, she will often feel thirsty. In addition, she will also experience rapid fatigue, muscle weakness, palpitations, irritability, etc. If these situations occur, the mother should go to the hospital as soon as possible to consult an endocrinologist, and at the same time ensure the physiological daily water needs.

5. Nervous thirst

There are also some unexplained thirst phenomena during breastfeeding. The mother will feel thirsty for no apparent reason and may also behave capriciously, angry, and aggressively. This is often a neuropsychiatric thirst and has no special impact on the mother. It can be treated symptomatically and by deceiving the body, such as holding up a cup of water and swallowing several times in succession. You can also moisten your lips with water, which can sometimes quench your thirst.

6. What to do if you feel thirsty during breastfeeding

(1) Drinking soup

Thirst during breastfeeding. If the mother cannot drink water during the confinement period, she can drink more soups on weekdays, such as boiling some beverages instead of water with rice wine, or washing the lychee shells and boiling them in water to drink as tea to relieve the mother's thirst symptoms. In addition, mothers can also drink more fresh fish soup, chicken soup, fresh milk, etc., which can not only replenish the body's nutrition but also quench thirst.

(2) Drink warm water or juice

When you feel thirsty during breastfeeding, the best zero-calorie drink is actually water. Mothers can also choose freshly squeezed pure fruit juice. For healthy breastfeeding mothers, they should drink at least 8 glasses of water, about 1500 ml, or an equal amount of liquid every day to meet the body's needs.
