Will cervical erosion cause disease? Gynecologists answer this way!

A woman's cervix may develop a variety of diseases, such as the well-known cervicitis and cervical erosion. We need to remind everyone that the symptoms of cervical erosion and cervicitis are very similar. For example, there will be an increase in vaginal discharge, the color of the vaginal discharge will also turn yellow, and the vaginal discharge will also be accompanied by an odor. Therefore, cervical erosion cannot be judged based on these symptoms. A detailed examination in the hospital is required to confirm the diagnosis. So, will cervical erosion lead to a pathological change?

Will cervical erosion cause disease?

According to clinical statistics in recent years, among gynecological diseases suffered by young women aged 20 to 30, the incidence of cervical erosion is as high as 90%, and the phenomenon of younger age is becoming more and more serious.

Cervical erosion mainly refers to the complete peeling of the cervical membrane in the vagina, exposing the rough tissue surface at the bottom, like an ulcer, without epithelial coverage. Usually, a circle of varying sizes or an irregular red area can be seen on the cervix in the vagina. The surface is covered with a single layer of columnar epithelium. The capillaries underneath are congested and edematous, the glands are closed, and viscous or purulent secretions are accumulated. The surface is often red, uneven, and erosive.

The main causes of cervical erosion are damage to the cervix or ectropion during delivery, abortion or surgery.

The main symptom of cervical erosion is increased leucorrhea, which is usually milky white, sometimes light yellow, purulent or bloody. When polyps are formed, there may be irregular vaginal bleeding or bleeding after sexual intercourse. When the inflammation spreads along the uterine bone ligament to the pelvic cavity, symptoms such as low back pain, pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea may occur, which worsen with each menstruation, bowel movement or sexual intercourse.

Will cervical erosion definitely induce cancer?

Severe cervical erosion may induce cervical cancer, although there is evidence that the incidence of cervical cancer in women with cervical erosion is twice as high as that in women without cervical erosion. In fact, cervical erosion is only a symptom of the disease and has no direct relationship with cervical cancer. Even if severe cervical erosion occurs, it does not necessarily develop into precancerous lesions or latent lesions of cervical cancer.

Therefore, women with cervical erosion can prevent cervical cancer as long as they take active preventive measures. Don't worry about it all day long, which will affect your normal emotions and cause depression. This will instead lead to endocrine disorders and become the source of functional diseases of the body.

How is cervical erosion caused?

Cervical erosion refers to the displacement of the squamous epithelium on the outside of the cervical opening and the columnar epithelium on the inside of the cervix at the junction. This phenomenon is a physiological change caused by estrogen in the female body. Cervical erosion lasts for decades from a woman's puberty. As for why some people have it and some don't, it depends on their physical constitution.

There are two types of epithelium on the surface of the female cervix during embryogenesis: primitive squamous epithelium and columnar epithelium. Before puberty, the original "squamo-columnar junction" is located inside the cervical canal. After puberty, under the action of estrogen, the volume of the cervix grows rapidly and greatly exceeds the uterine body, and "cervical ectropion" occurs. Ectropion exposes the cervical columnar epithelium at the external os of the cervix, which appears red and rough. The red color is because the columnar epithelium is arranged in a single layer with a rich vascular network underneath. The roughness is because the columnar epithelium fuses with each other to form villi or granular shapes.

What are the symptoms of cervical erosion? Cervical erosion has no special clinical manifestations.

Earlier textbooks listed "cervical erosion" as one of the symptoms of chronic cervicitis, believing that the size of the area is a measure of the severity of the inflammation. An area less than 1/3 is mild, 1/3-2/3 is moderate, and more than 2/3 is severe. However, this is actually just the different degrees of eversion of the columnar epithelium after being affected by estrogen, which is a normal physiological phenomenon.
